Toronto Property Taxes

Thank your fellow Torontonians for voting in a NDP mayor.
The sad part is property taxes in Toronto will never be lowered moving forward regardless who is mayor or on council.
It's lazy politicking...rather than finding efficiencies it's a lot easier to just raise taxes.

For example, maybe during the next pandemic, when no one is allowed to go anywhere, they can actually lay off TTC staff rather than cry that ridership was down during the pandemic and make up for it by raising taxes.

Justin "I love refugees, asylum seekers, illegals, etc" Trudeau standing on his soapbox deserves most if not all the blame. If someone ask him who will house and feed these folks, his answer is likely "I don't care. Not my problem."

They raised property taxes every year but 2011. Mostly in line with inflation and more than real wage increases. That is prudent management.

2011 - 0% (Ford)
2012 - 2.5% (Ford)
2013 - 2% (Ford)
2014 - 1.6% (Ford)
2015 - 2.75% (Tory)
2016 - 1.9% (Tory)
2017 - 2% (Tory)
2018 - 2.1% (Tory)
2019 - 2.55% (Tory)
Now add in Mel's 0% and 1 or 2% over his 6 years and Long Done Dong's 2020-2023 duct tape budgetary property tax increases and here we are today, A $1.8billion budgetary hole!

Now, imagine if you will that if these 3 twats, "Boiling Pot" Mel, Rob "Crackie" Fraud and Long Done Dong Tory had actually just added another 1% on top of their burn down the city budgetary property tax increases over the near 20 years that they screwed the city over, then poof, voila, this $1.8billion budgetary gap that they gifted us with, would have never ever existed.

Those little, tiny, puny, micro extra 1% extra property tax increases per year compounded over 20 years would now equal enough property revenue to balance the budget today.

20 yearly installments of puny property tax increases would have been much more palatable than a 44% property tax increase that is needed to balance the budget now.

They screwed over Toronto big time.

These 3 twits were never serious, responsible nor competent stewards of the city's finances, resources and capabilities never mind being totally inept at having any vision for Toronto, except to bleeding it dry.

Funny how you don't question why all this money is needed to fill the "budgetary gap"...you just assume there is one. How was the gap created exactly? Perhaps too much money extorted by city unions for perpetual increases?
All those condos that have been crammed in everywhere, each unit paying property taxes on the single same piece of land...where has this money gone? How was it managed?

It's not the fault of a single mayor...they are the face of a council that has run amok with tax/spend habits without putting in the effort to manage the finances.

Chow has shown she is the laziest one so far by simply going for gold with the least amount of pushback on where the existing money is being spent.

1) Educate yourself. Knock yourself out and inform thyself about the last 7 budgets passed: 2023 City Budget – City of Toronto

2) Stop whining and get involved in the city that you allege you live in: 2024 City Budget – City of Toronto

3) Once you have educated yourself and stopped whining, please detail all of this waste that you allege is rampant within the city. The devil is in the details, none of which, "Crackie" Ford, Long Done Dong Tory, yourself and others of your delusionary cohorts have been ever able to point to. The mythical Gravy Train has never and does not exist.

4) Whine, whine about the condition of parks, facilities, roads, services and infrastructure is all you scamps do and the kicker is that all you numb brains believe that removing resources and funding will somehow magically fix things. Talk about a delusionary existence.

5) 20 years of starving the city of funding and resources has led to this mess.

6) Toronto needs serious adults to fix things, not toddler prone to tantrums.

Thank your fellow Torontonians for voting in a NDP mayor.
Could also thank the electorate for being in debt up to their eyeballs to begin with. Someone has to pay for all their wants.

See also the province and Feds. Something those that created the messes don’t want to admit. They just blame the right and those that come in after.

There is a lot of wealth within Toronto, obscene wealth, multiple property wealth, greed driven wealth, greed driven wealth at the expense and to the detriment of most Torontonians.

The province has taken over the DVP so that's big money saved. I'll' give you credit for blaming the Feds as far as the refugee issue.
But Toronto needs to stop looking to higher levels of government for help and get their shit together. Other cites don't get nearly the % of cash from the Feds or province for bail outs.
Oh and if Toronto has such a cash problem, stop thinking about renaming streets.

Maybe/yep . The 1% of the electorate are still just 1% of voters. With respect to wealth and greed yep.
And or the wealth gap…it’s not called the Golden Horseshoe, center of the universe without reasons.

Nor are all three levels of govt in debt up to their eyeballs with huge messes, a happy coincidence with unhappy consequence

Well, don't you keep good company, both you notorious crackhead Rob Ford both thought the city's budget was full of waste. Too bad reality didn't align with yours or Robs views of how the city manages its money.

All those condos that have been crammed in everywhere, each unit paying property taxes on the single same piece of land...
Ya the citizens or "folks" to use Ford parlance, that live in those condos, use roads, public transit (hopefully), schools, sewers, drinking water, garbage, recycling, drag queen library shows. That "single piece of land" with multiple units on it isn't just generating unused profits because there's more than one household living in a tower, all those "crammed condos" consume additional city managed resources that need to be paid for.

...where has this money gone? How was it managed?
That information is in the budget pdf no need to speculate or insinuate it was badly managed. Dive right in, find that gravy your cracked out forebearer and KPMG couldn't find.

I'm glad you can see it's not a single mayor's fault, but I'm confused when you immediately blame Hon. Mayor Chow right after saying that. That kind of hurts your point there, but in that case you should start the blame game with that tory John Tory or that tory Rob Ford for over a decade of inaction if you want to find the lazy mayors that led us here.

And yet you can't answer the question as to where the money has gone and how there's an alleged $1.8 billion shortfall?

Here's a clue: spending beyond their means and handing out money to every union and crusader that comes knocking.

In the real world, if people spend beyond their means and don't prioritize and manage their finances they accumulate debt that becomes unmanageable.

With the city, once that becomes unmanageable they just ask for more money.

So? Why did they spend money they didn't have?

That budget PDF doesn't explain where the money went...it explains where the money should go.
The infrastructure that condos use is already there. They don't build new roads and schools in the city every time a building goes up. They tie into existing infrastructure and services. The taxes collected from each unit pay for that. So why the shortfall let alone profits? Why raise taxes more than the rate of inflation?

Chow is the face of council who is keen on the tax/spend mentality along with the other councilors that always went against Ford and Tory and anyone else who has tried to save money. I've said Toronto council is very left leaning...she's the most. She wants everyone else to pay rather than do the work to save money. Typical socialist mindset.

You can't read budgets?

Did you know that even after this raise Toronto will still have the 5th lowest municipal taxes in Ontario?

who do you think paid for the 400 series which is the busiest highway and delivers more commerce than anywhere in North America. Also gets and needs the most maintenance and snow removal etc.speaking of which, who paid for the army to clear it one snowy day…

Who paid for the 407, and everything else that brought and brings people and companies to the 416/905 in first place? Why do you think all the immigrants go there, youth from small town Ontario, and even adults..why do you think you have a housing crises in the first place.

You think all those companies with high paying jobs located in the 416/905?because it was a pig sty and has nothing they need and want?

Who pays for all the Hydro infrastructure so astronauts can see the “Golden Horseshoe” from the moon at night?

Where do you think the vast vast majority of public servants like nurses, teachers, doctors, and more live and work. Where do you think all the government beuracrats and pencil pushers, biologists, scientist and PSWs and lawyers, and more live and work…

Where do you think the vast majority of corporate welfare goes so companies with high paying jobs will come or stay….Who paid for world class hospitals and more…speaking of which who pays for all the research grants, operations, organ transplants, where are all the cancer and trauma centers and more…

Why do you think the province is 400 billion in debt? Why do you think the city of Toronto and now feds are in debt up to their eyeballs too…Also just one big happy coincidence no doubt.

Fairies?
Look around Canada, how many world class cities do you see….answer is one….you think that shit is free?….watch a movie called field of dreams…

And while the city itself is “world class”, its residents think they are all that, and have none at all…hence why everyone else in Canada calls you the center of the universe.

get a clue?

I’d also bet a lot of money you be one of the first on the left to howl about socioeconomics, and bitch about the greedy rich and trickle down being a scam. Not grasping you can change the word down to out…
By Toronto i mean the GTA, but by the net balance of income taxes paid vs spent in Toronto, there is a significant outflow.

I generally mean the gta too. ok, fair enough, prior to leaving Bay Street I took the Go train daily. A long with tens of thousands of others. Would occasionally drive in, when we had work functions, or were taking clients and colleagues from other firms out.

My monthly go pass at the time was $250. That money went to Metrolinks and their employees. Who in turn would spend it where they lived and worked..

Arriving at Union station, along with all the other lemmings we pass all the Tims and fast food joints. Plus much more in the Path…Prior to leaving leases for those ran 6-10k a month…..With that kind of overhead……………

over lunch tens of thousands would often spend even more. In the evenings, there’s Dinner and drinks, Blue Jays, Leafs and Raptors. The ballet and pubs and bars…The people that worked at these, and others in turn spend their $$…same with Taxi drivers and TTC employees.

Is it possible during and post Covid that’s why many of went out of business while we collected paychecks in our Pjs..? Banked serious money, that today is in savings or being spent and spent elsewhere and driving demand while peons struggle to keep lights or heat on, buy food ….

And today taxes are being hiked in the 416. Over and above mountains of debt, and budget constraints that make councils ability to hire more police to deal with bangers problematic. Or deal with the homeless problematic…or A to Z…speaking of MTPS and bangers…when was the last time they got decent raises or hired enough to keep up with an exploding population since 2012…..Funny how they are hiring a bunch now ( see post above)….that people ( voters) …are making noise….

btw. I’m in favour of road tolls. I’ve said that many times. Similar arguements are made by the rich and well off when they drive to their million dollar cottages in their fancy smancy cars and trucks, but in that case spend very little. Over load small town emergency services, because they don’t know how to drive or swim, are hooligans, get drunk and into fights or accidents, leave garbage for others to clean up and maintenance budgets…and more.and think shit is free….

Not the least of which is the roads they use to get there….or the infrastructure that ultimately is responsible for their world class city ( the only one in Canada) that everyone pays for and their high paying jobs.

.those small towns that have lost a ton of industry and tax revenue, and people/businesses in search of greener pastures that they turned blind eyes and deaf ears to, and still do, hiked land taxes 10-20% years ago as a result.

Think they are all that, nor grasp why housing demand is so bad..

That's a typical union mentality...point to what other unions have to get the same or better. It's not about what other cities are paying or who has the highest/lowest...it's about where the money is going and why there is an alleged "gap".
In the real world, you prioritize and budget within your means. You defer and cut so that you don't end up with unmanageable debt and then spend when you can afford it.

You are blindly accepting the poor-me story that's shoveled to the public from our council. Your energy would be better spent asking questions like "how did we get here and how has the money been managed'?

A budget is not a financial analysis of where the money has gone. An audit is what uncovers where the money has gone.

ps the city has enough money. They throw it at things like renaming public squares and streets. A city that's as broke as it claims wouldn't do that considering all the other issues.

there might be “some” truth to the unions. However if anything like the province, there PS is the leanest per capita in Canada. Has the cities civil service kept pace with the cities growth?

When you're losing $60 million+ per year on TTC fare evasion while rewarding those employees by giving them more money and cozy pensions, that doesn't have anything to do with "keeping pace"...it has to do with management.
We all know enough PS workers (at least I do) who almost brag about having to spend their annual budgets or risk not getting the same or more the following year...known as "March Madness" ...when they all just blow it on stuff they don't really need.

It's the sum of all parts. No one is confident that every tax dollar is being managed properly and the lazy solution is to just extort more from constituents. Real businesses and personal households would not survive that way...why do we let our government get away with it?
