It looks as though the Leafs as a team have a target on its back and bad teams like Buffalo and Detroit who are already out of the playoff run seem to have extra motivation to try to beat them. They seem to pride themselves being the spoiler but I think it's due to the players' jealousy of how much accolade and media attention the Leafs and their rookies are getting. Their fans should be asking where were all these efforts and determination all season long.

As of today, playoff chances for the following teams:

Philadelphia 0.05%
Carolina 1.1%
Islanders 2.3%
Tampa Bay 15.7%
Boston 88.6%
Ottawa 95.6%
Toronto 96.6%

All numbers from sportsclubstats.com
MoneyPuck.com has slightly different figures, but substantially the same.

Those have to change today as Boston, NYI, TB win. Ottawa reeling right now with injuries (2-5-3) could fall out of the playoffs and TB sneeks in, if Ottawa can't take at least 3 out 4 pts from a home and home series with Detroit.

Looks like the biggest game of the year will be on Thursday vs Tampa Bay.
The Buffalo game is the next big game. If the Leafs can get two points with a row, they can pretty much elinminate Tampa with a win on Thursday. I'd also like to see how these young Leafs respond to the beating they took from the Sabres last time they played them. They should go with the mentality that they are the better team and should beat them if they play up to their capabilities.

After being thrashed by Florida the Leafs came back and beat them. Revenge game number 2, let's see how the Leafs respond to Buffalo.

Why is everytime a bad goal is scored against the Leafs, Gardiner is usually the culprit ?

Everytime.....usually?
These 2 words don't work well together.

That being said:

Seemingly.

Fan prejudice.

Recency bias.

Opinion, not fact.

Gardiner faces the opponents best players more than other Maple Leafs defencemen.

Ok teacher, I'll change everytime to whenever, is that better ?

I don't have the stats to back it up but from the games I've watched Zaitsev plays against other teams top players more than Gardiner does, and when the game is on the line I see more Polak than Gardiner.

And I'll add that +\- is one of the most meaningless stats in hockey.

The Leafs inch closer the playoffs with a 4-2 win over Buffalo. The Leafs can clinch tomorrow with a Boston regulation win over TB and the Leafs get a loser point vs Washington.

Being amongst the leaders in giveaways (ie. Brent Burns) would indicate a player possesses the puck a fair bit, yes?
Possible but the point is Gardiner is not the only one who gives the puck away. Playmaking d-men have high percentage of give aways anyways. Leafs fans make this illussion that he's the only one and worst at it. We could still be stuck with Beaucheman, I have to remind Leaf fans. I'd rather have Gardiner.

I wonder what the % chance to win the Leafs had, up 3 goals in the 3rd period, game 7 against Boston.
