The problem with trading all your veterans for high draft picks and prospects is it doesn't always pan out. Just ask Buffalo and Edmonton.
Buffalo has struggled for a little while but they only went into full rebuild last year. Their new owner about 4 years ago tried to spend to the cap with ufas rather than sticking with a plan. Now they are doing a clear and focused rebuilding. For most of the past 6 or 7 years they were basically the leafs. Retool after retool.

Two weeks from today is March 2, the NHL Trade Deadline.

Everyone on the Leafs should available for the right price.
Hoping the Leafs just get as many picks as they can and/or a few prospects, ... blue chippers even better ! :thumb:

The Nashville pick will be higher. The Predators are a mirage. Solid defence. James Neal is a very good player. But if you're counting on Mike Fisher, Mike Ribeiro & Filip Forsberg to lead the offence against the Kings, Blues, Blackhawks, Ducks or Sharks in the playoffs, you're going down in flames. I'm calling Nashville to be an opening round casualty.
Correct me if I am wrong, however the seeding of the draft picks is not dependant upon playoff performance, rather it depends upon the relative positioning of teams at the end of the regular season.
Nashville's exit from the playoffs, early or late will not impact ho high the pick will be

To me it doesn't matter how many draft picks you stockpile, Its still how you draft and pick with your picks, to get the right people

Making the right choices is obviously important, but if you don't have the picks, you don't have any choices. The leafs need to stockpile and then hope that huge group of scouts they employ know what they are doing.

Think you and Iron are both right. As Shack noted, both sided have different needs. Hence, I think both sides 'win' because they addressed their current respective needs.

Nashville gets better for a playoff push. Toronto does not risk having two UFAs walk in the spring. To get a 1st rounder for Franson? That's OK with me.

I can't see the Leafs having much desire for Jokinen. The only way they don't flip him for a 3rd or 4th right away is if Nonis has plans to move either Kadri, Bozak or both. Past couple days I've read Detroit showing interest in Phaneuf / Winnik and others teams seeking Bozak.

I'm fine with Franson gone. He was seeking unreasonable money to be resigned, and has become a flat out liability on the ice. But Santorelli I'm disappointed the team could not come to terms with. I liked him a lot. Both guys I think just wanted out, and I'm glad Toronto got something good in return.

To start the fire sale this soon before the trade deadline would indicate much more is still to come. Shanny has to know the work ethic missing all of Jan wasn't even Franson or Santorelli.
So Toronto has yet to even begin fixing the problem areas yet. With the UFA matter done, now they can proceed.
I agree and especially about santorelli who played with some gumption

I'm sure there'll be a few other deals to follow, but if they're really serious about changing the culture and improving the core for the future, either one or both of Kessel or Phaneuf have to go.

Phaneuf should be a very effective play for a good team where he doesn't have to play 25 minutes a game against the top players of every team. The heavy workload with the Leafs makes him a even slower player than he actually is .

I wouldn't be too surprised if Kessel remains for next season as every team needs a natural scorer like him. They just need a better defensive structure and a true No. 1 centre to play with him. He's likely the easier to trade for a good value in return though.

It may only take two seasons to turn the ship around, they are in much better shape now than when Burke took over. At that time the farm system had been completely razed and Rask had been traded away. The rebuilding is not starting at absolute zero.

Only if their prospects and draft picks can make it at the NHL level.

A loss to the Hurricanes will move the Leafs closer to what appears to be MLSE"s objective. Hurricanes have 2 games in hand as well. If the Leafs display as much effort as they did in their last outing Hurricanes should win easily. Pretty sad!

How about taking tanking to another level . Start game by pulling your goalie ..
Hmmmm ... Maybe not, too obvious. Good thinking though. :thumb:

The last game I watched, partly, was Hockey Night in Canada, Saturday, Toronto at Montreal.

Does not matter how the teams are in any year, this will always be a good game, and sure enough, the Horacheck Shit-O-Meter had a higher reading.

After that, back to the tanking.

After 20 games of the tanking, it more or less looks deliberate. You can't prove it, but we know they doing funny stuff at the race track, and you can't prove that neither most of the time.

At the peak of the Leafs season, they were 3 points out of 1st place in the conference. That is hard to believe this is the same team, different coach, just a handful of losses from the cellar. If you were another team that is struggling this year, what the Leafs have done, is not right. Right now, the Leafs have a real shot at the Dave McConner (sp?) lottery draw. And they were 3 points out of 1st place.

If Brenden Shannahan is able to pull this off, finish the season as the 5th worst team or lower, then maybe he could blackmail Commissioner Bettman if fixing the lottery, as he used to work with the league. Maybe Shannahan could tell Bettman that if he does not win the lottery, then the photos of the commissioner and Marv Albert will find its way onto Twitter.

As Leafs fans, we need a laugh. Yessssss!

the leafs have bad mangement, bad coaching, and crappy players.
The leafs fans are stupid still supporting this loser team.
The top draft pick doesn't mean there will get better soon.
My prediction for this year stanley cup finals is LA Kings vs Montreal Canadiens. The LA KINGS will win the cup agian.

Syl Apps and George Armstrong are the newest statutes on legends row. George is a bit of a surprise to me. Hope Harvey "Busher" Jackson makes it in.

Well good thing is the Leafs have built up some insurance for when the players win a game.
Leafs beat Winnipeg 4-3 in OT, JVR scored the winner.

Next up Philadelphia on Thursday.
