How do you not call it a goal? You could see it wasn't under his front pad and the rest of him was in the net. If Phoenix believed it wasn't a goal there would have been a lot more screaming.
Great attempt by Smith to keep the puck hidden.
if you could see it wasn,t under his front pad, then 'right then', why didn,t either ref point out that it was in?

The ref called it a goal. The replay was inconclusive so the call stood. Phoenix didn't argue much. Why is it so hard for you to accept ?

I'm not a fan of the shootout either.

I say go 5 min with 4 on 4 then if that doesn't settle it go to 3 on 3 until someone scores.
I say there is nothing wrong with a tie.

not at the time he didn,t. neither one of them. it was only after the video they told both coaches their opinion.

I have no problem with a tie either but the NHL believes that it isn't exciting enough for today's audiences.
Tie if for no other reason than all games will be the worth the same number of points.

I do not like ties at all. Mind you the shoot-out is not my favorite either.
I decided to go with the lesser(in my opinion) of two evils .... so shoot outs it is.

I would not mind some sort of 4/4, 3/3 expansion but then you really start to were down your star players.

I think some teams would not try so hard to get to OT if the NHL dropped the 'loser' point.
Simply you win in regulation, OT or shoot out you get two, loser gets nothing.

Loser gets zero is also good. Way more tension/excitement and again, all games are of equal importance in the standings. Not some worth a whopping 50% more.

I like the idea of each game having a 3 point value. A win in regulation gets you 3 points, you get 2 points for a win in OT or a shoot out. You get the 1 point if you are tied at the end of regulation and lose in the OT or shoot out. (not a soccer fan but I think they use a system similar to this.) I would also like to see OT extended to 10 min. I hate it when I see teams playing for the tie because 1 point is better than none, 3 points may give them a little more incentive.

Much better first two periods for Toronto. Third they seemed to get lazy and sit on lead until... the inevitable tie. Nice the team picks up 2pts when Sens,Habs and Bruins all lose. Bozak comes back on the 29th, it might be just what that first line needs to start producing again. I'd hate to see Kadri break up the 2nd line of Lupul/Holland/Raymond though..

See the Flyers win again, going from a disgrace to sitting in 8th. Just crazy..
When is a team in eighth place but not in eighth place ?
When said team is in the NHL with the new NHL playoff format. :D

The Flyers may be in eighth when you look at the standings, but they would not make the playoffs were they to begin today.
So Flyer fans ... how do like the new format ? :frusty:
Well now the Flyers have passed the Hurricanes and are in a playoff position.
CBC has standings as they pertain to playoffs.

I'm shocked Ottawa is doing so bad. With the addition of Ryan, I thought the balance of the season they would stay locked around 4th-5th in the conference. On paper, they really are a good team, and though Alfie is great, thought they went younger and deeper in the offseason..
Here's the Sens problems.

Spezza has chronic back issues which are affecting his play. Michalek with all of his knee problems is a step slower while Anderson has fought the puck all season.

Combine that with the loss of veteran leadership in Alfie and Gonchar and you have leadless wandering hockey team.

I suspect in the new year Lehner will be the #1 goalie and Spezza and Michalek will have their roles reduced as they play their younger players more.

Either way they will be hard pressed to make the playoffs this year.

The Senaturds are a budget team and their cheapskate owner didnt want to pay - unlike the TML which will always be a cap max team. With the cap set to rise this is good news for Toronto but bad news for small market back-waters like Ottawa.

Montreal - See the lucky Habs don't play again until Sat 28. Not sure how they managed the whole Christmas week off, but good on them. Little extra family / down time is nice. Plus they have earned it.
Incredible - 22 to 27th off then a Florida road trip.

btw, dont you hate that show '24ch' on TSN

Good news only if you spend your money wisely. Clarkson is grossly overpaid and even Kessel's deal is expensive considering he's not among the leading point getters this year. Kadri and Bernier are on short, cheap deals but I imagine they will be looking for large increases in a few years time.

Kesssel is in the top twenty, if you check his past years, he's been there way more than not. He does what he is expected to do. Analysts have even said his defence game has improved as well. He's had his dry spell, but it has much to with hoe thither teams are playing him. The play by p[lay announcers list night comment on the Ranger doing what other team were doing against Kessel. He gets the puck in the offence end he's double teamed. He must be doing something right for the teams to do that. The next Leaf LVR doesn't even crack the top 50 for crying put loud.

Good players expect to get double teamed and fight through it. That's what separates the stars from the superstars. That's the difference between Crosby and Ovechkin and guys like Kessel. As of this morning Giroux is 20th in scoring ahead of Kessel.

The are very few Crosby's and Ovechkins in the league and Kessel is no where near their quality, but he is and has been the best offensive weapon on the LEAF team, year in year out since joining. If the leafs were a better team, depth wise his stats would also be better. It is a team sport after all. both Crosby and Ovie have players near the level of play and in the top in scoring and get support from them.
