It sure is unnatural for the Leafs fan to say 3-0, last time the bursted out of the gate like this was looong ago.

It is very early, but consider: they are getting the full 2 points against each of the 3 good teams, imagine when they gel together, full roster, and full of confident... there is no end of hope for this season.

Multiple Kudos to Nonis and RC for building the team, picking and trading wisely, instill a real work ethic, putting on the ice the people who give the team the best chance to win. Despite what Grabo and MacArthur said, seems to me they were thinking about themselves more than the team.

Note on the goalies: Rheimer is a good goalie, but not the great one for the time he has played for Leafs. There is always the heart skipping for me whenever he coughs up the puck with a juicy rebound, flopping like a rag doll, mishandles the puck or giving it away, falling down behind the goal, losing the stick, tangle up with his own Dmen..... Bernier gives me a calm feeling when the opposition coming charging in, whirling around the net... I think all the Leafs around him feel the same way, they feed off on his calm and stay better in position more than running around in panic trying to gather in the rebound or the loose puck...The last haft of game 3 or the whole game 2 are a startling different from the first game or the first haft of last game: I could calmly sip my beer in a total bliss. Any of you have the sinking feeling of THE game 7 repeating on the last part of the first game, and on the second period down 4-2? Rheimer will still be a valuable member on the team, taking his share of the load, no goalie can play 82 games a season, or never getting yanked mid game, Bernier will have his share of lost for sure but I am saying it is very fortunate we landed him in the trade.

and the fact that this is a much better team that should improve a bunch when Clarkson starts to play. Carlyle might have something to do with it too. Better coach with a more likable personality.

lol .. I agree this 3-0 feels a bit different it may have something to do with the fact of what happened last year ie making the playoffs . Although in that season they even started better then 3-0 ..... 4-0-1 and so 9 points in first 5 games of the season .

It appears it will be Bernier to start Tuesday night vs Colorado. I guess Carlyle will go with the hot hand, at least that is what I heard second hand supposedly from RC.

Someone mentioned earlier that the spinning shootout goal from Saturday night should not count. Well not according to the current rules for shootouts in the NHL.
I know there is a grey area which can be interpreted differently according to ones wishes, but those attempts are allowed ... so far.

If it were up to me 'I would not allow them'.

Well its all over! The dream of the 82-0 season is gone :(

On a serious note Ranger has to go. He's incompetent as a NHL D-man. Need to send him to the Marlies for some grooming and bring up McWilliam or Brennan. Bernier played great and reminds me of Felix the cat. So far David Bolland is turning out to be a fantastic pick. One second he creating opportunities and 3 seconds later he's on the d breaking up the Av's chances. He's hitting like a beast too. Not too happy about the result but I'm more dissatisfied with their disinterest in the game tonight.

Absolutely agree, Ranger has always seemed one step behind in every game that I've seen him. Carlyle likes the big boys though so he'll probably stay for a while if not the entire season. In a cap-free world and if playing time were given on merit, Liles should be in the lineup, from a talent perspective he's a top 6 on the Leafs defence, he's small but way more mobile, faster, skates the puck out, quarterbacks the power play, and unlike Ranger really gives an effort when he's out there.

Gardiner also looks like Ranger, kinda lazy, seems to get caught out of position a lot and is not very good defensively. Perhaps it's time to look at trading him before the rest of the league catches on to his limitations. I don't know much about McWilliam or Brennan, Holzer would be better than Ranger at this point especially since Fraser is injured.

I like Orr but an actual scoring winger may have helped, especially since it seems that Kadri is in the doghouse again on the fourth line and he won't get out of it with Orr on his wing.

Leafs with no jump = ordinary team.

There is rumor of a pending trade for Gardiner, for a good forward, we'll see. I have my money on Nonis doing the magic again. It kind of makes sense when the Leafs:

-Have many young and promising Dmen in the system, I think they are touted as a team with most depth in defense, still have to mature though.
-Gardiner is tremendous skater, amazing on-ice vision and a offensive thread but he is still learning in the defense aspects. The Leafs right now has MANY of those: Riley, Franson, Brennan.... even a bit of #3 too, chasing the glory of scoring AND forgetting to keep the puck out of their zone. If we can get a nice forward, when his value is still high up, Kudos to Nonis.

Also, Kadri is not playing with gusto, he is skilled for sure but then when he is too predictable and too easy to knock off the puck his effectiveness is severely limited. Kadri has to get the fire burning again inside, be a wonder kid he is capable of, otherwise RC is absolutely correct to use Bolland more, he is an all around player, did Grapes compare him to Gilmore? It is a little over the top and too early (wishful thinking) still. If you WERE a coach, what would you do? Award hardworking and effective player or putting up with haft-ass'ed effort? And after all, the coach job is trying to win games, not stroking anyone's ego. Please Kadri, don't fall for this crap like Grabbo or MacArthur did: play your hardest, the ice time will come, don't sulk and whine!

Nazem Kadri got 13 mins a game ... Mostly playing with guys like Carter Ashton and Colton Orr ... The coach keeps playing mind games with two of your of our young players ie Kadri and Gardnier . Lupul came to the Ducks as a young player ( 25 goal scorer with Flyers ) and he ran him out of town . Is he going to do the samething with Kardri . He did it too Garbo .

AS much as I would like to see Ranger succeed after the twists and turns his life have been through so far I have to agree with the masses here that his play has been sub par thus far.

I'm also for all of his talents questioning Gardiner's hockey I.Q. He just makes some really bad decisions out there. But unless the deal of the century comes along I would keep him around and suffer through his development pains. Guys with his ability are hard to find.

Kadri is another enigma. From the blue line in he is quite gifted but the rest of his game needs a lot of work.

It's players like these that make coaches go grey prematurely,lol.

Ranger so far has been friggin' scary. Not sure how good a pairing he and Gardiner are.
Kadri was benched by Wilson and a lot of people were upset. That should tell us it isn't RC but the player. I agree with The Oracle in saying "gifted from the blue line in but the rest of his game needs a lot of work" I don't think he is a 4th line player either, but that may be a wake up call.

After my post I was thinking the same thing .. Two coaches same player same results ... It maybe time for Kadri to look in the mirrow .. Saying that, Wilson and Caryle are similiar in one way ... They aren't players coach but old traditional Mike Keenan type of coaches ...

One loss and the the calls to 'get rid of this and/or that guy' start. Ga damn ! Did you think the Leafs were going 82-0 ? Follow that up with a 16 win playoff ?



This loss, so early in the season, may end up doing more for Blue then an other win would.
It will show the Leafs that they may get away with sloppy play against equally sloppy teams like the ones they played so far, but when a team like Colorado, full of good young hungry players, comes along the Leafs actually have to show with their best game.


Trade Gardiner ? I shudder to think of what the Leafs are giving up in Gardiner.
Geez the kid was playing US high school in 07/08. Six years later he is playing in one of the most intense hockey markets in the world.
I, for one, do not want to get rid of him, but .... that said, I do understand the idea behind trading him now.
The Leafs do look good on D for years to come.



To sum up .... I prefer not to trade him, but in order to 'get something' you usually have to 'give up something'.






I think, despite the loss, the Leafs have found their number one goalie in Bernier.

As for Ranger, I would give him a lot of leeway to get back to NHL level.
He was out of hockey for about two seasons for unknown personal reasons. Give him time.
