It was a great game by Scrivens last night and he is clearly a goalie of the future. Keep in mind one thing about this goaltending situation.. Scrivens may have been the best goalie in camp but he was sent down to the minors not because he deserved to go but because if we had sent Gustafson down then his trade value would have plummeted even worse that it was. The way it is happening right now he is once again becoming a trade-able commodity. At some point Burke will deal one of them (imho).

The same thing can be said of the log jam with defensemen, there is no way that Komisarek could be traded for anything but a bag of pucks had they sent him to the Marlies.

Now that both players are playing better maybe some team will be interested. Burke seems to be very good at finding gems under rocks, maybe it's time he let one go. With that thought in mind here is my fantasy deal........ Gustafson and Komisarek to CBJ for Rick Nash. even if we have to throw in Kadri.
A few little problems with your little fantasy trade:

Komisarek: No-Trade/No Movement Clause
Nash: No-Trade/No/Movement Clause

And, teams tend to want to receive relatively equal value in trade, so,....Columbus would make that trade why?

3 wins and 2 losss with a 3.00 GAA and .897 SV in last 5 games is a hot goalie to you ? Just asking
Scrivens was amazing last night. The monster has been very good too and seems to be playing with much more confidence. Kind of interesting that the Leafs have gone from goaltending is a major problem to Reimer, the monster, and Scrivens all capable of getting a win. The nice part is they don't have to rush Reimer back.

Mailbook, I think Ironhead was saying that going with the hot hand until he loses meant Gustavsson was just coming off a win so you continue with him. It will be interesting to see who they go with on Sat.

I notice all of us Wilson haters have shut up. Amazing what a few wins can do.
This is exactly what I was saying.

I won't shut up ... The power play is still one of the worse and so is the penalty killing units and they are still have one of the worse goals against averages in the league ...

No need to defend Wilson cause he couldn't care less what everyone thinks ... It's never his fault the Leafs lose .. Ask him ... So if it's not his fault when they lose then don't give him credit for this start ..
I seem to recall the PK was OK after the first two or three games, but took a bad turn soon after. Maybe the PK is not as bad as it seems this season.
The PP still sucks, but I will wait a few more games well Kessel and Connolly form some chemistry.

Special units are bad and I also would love to see him go. As long as the Leafs keep on trucking he will be here unless he decides to leave. If you read my post there was no defense of him. It is just futile to call for his ass when they are leading the league.(Season is young)
Gustavasson has played well. He does allow some soft goals but overall his play has improved. I still don't thing he is anywhere close to being as good as the initial hype.
Not even close to the hype I was sold, however it does take goalies longer to come around sometimes.

So they need to be in first (way, way, way ahead of anybody's expectations) plus have the best stats, otherwise winning/being in first doesn't count for anything.

If you are going to be so critical even when they are doing great, it really removes any credibility you have in your observations. You come off as somebody who just loves to complain for the sake of complaining.

As others said, most people, Wilson haters included, have enough sense to button it when they are winning.

I agree there are deficiencies and the season is young, but for now they are winning. Why don't you sit back and actually enjoy it. After all, you do say you are a Leaf fan.
I have long had my suspicions about Guy's claim to being a Leaf fan. Criticism is good, but one does have to admit the roses do smell nice once in awhile.

WOW ! Fucking WOW !
Now we are talking steal, I mean deal.

Actually it may not be as far fetched as one may think. If Columbus keeps losing, there will likely be some salary dumped in the future.

Rick Nash is still the franchises crown jewel in Columbus, so i think that they would want a lot more than what you say in your fantasy deal!
And why do staunch Leaf fans, especially members of Leaf nation always think that every team is willing or should trade their best players to the Leafs for nothing?

They're delusional.

They figure other teams should trade jewels for semi-precious gems.

I know what he said.

The fact that the Leafs won the last game with the Monster in net does not automatically mean he has the hot hand.
He doesn`t.

I`m saying stick with a hot goalie, one who is playing great, at least until he loses a game but that doesn`t mean you automatically sit him when the team loses.

The Monster was 3-2 in his last 5 starts and he let is some brutal goals.
It was not a tough call to give Scrivens the start in the second game of a back-to-back set.
And he looked so good that I think you have to keep him going.
If he was mediocre like the Monster and the Leafs still won, then maybe switch it up again.

first of all ... that's why it's called a fantasy trade.
second... no movement clauses aren't really much of an issue.. Kaberle had one too but in all fairness so did Sundin. IT's just not an automatic deal breaker.

lastly.... I don't agree with your comment relatively equal trade value. You value Nash more then these three but trade value fluctuates based on the team's needs, and in some cases (like Columbus' win loss record) general managers will make moves to save their own jobs.

a serviceable goalie like the monster who is supposed to have lots of upside might fix their goalie problems, Komisarek might well be able to eat upwards of 15-20 minutes a night and be a huge plus in the dressing room while prospect Kadri might play on their second line and have immediate impact with the teams secondary scoring and together they equal the loss of Nash's huge salary.

Scrivens ready if called

If Ben Scrivens plays in goal Saturday night against the Boston Bruins, you can be absolutely certain that his Grandma Sharon will be the first to know.

You see, she was a bit upset with her grandson when he told reporters how his parents were his No. 1 fans.

“She left me a really funny voice mail . . . she said she was kind of hurt because she always thought she was my biggest fan,” Scrivens, 25, said on Friday after practice at the MasterCard Centre. “I guess there’s a competition going on back home over who’s my biggest fan.”

Scrivens was solid in his NHL debut on Thursday in Columbus where the league leading Leafs defeated the Blue Jackets 4-1. It might just have been the best goaltending performance of the season for the 9-3-1 Toronto club. The goalie from Spruce Grove, Alta. Stopped 38 of the 39 shots fired by the Blue Jackets.

Whether he gets a second start, only coach Ron Wilson, knows for sure and he wasn’t spilling any secrets after practice. The only thing for certain is that Leafs No. 1 goalie, James Reimer, won’t be playing and also won’t be dressing as a back-up against the defending Stanley Cup champions. He’s still recovering from concussion-like symptoms (neck injury) and didn’t skate at practice.

“We haven’t decided (who’s going to play goal),” Wilson said after practice. “Reimer hit a plateau in his recovery so we’ve decided it would be better to not ask him to go onto the ice. With the other two goalies playing well, it’s better for him to work off the ice.

“We’ve got healthy guys, who are doing the job. We’ll give James plenty of time to recover. There is no rush to bring him back.”

Scrivens didn’t find out he was starting against Columbus until the pre-game skate. He hasn’t been told if he’ll get a second consecutive start or whether he’ll be backing up Jonas Gustavsson, who lost 6-2 when Toronto visited Boston earlier this season.

“I’m not too sure . . . it’s not my job to worry,” Scrivens said. “I’m just happy to be practicing out there, especially of not being sure what was going on the last couple of weeks. I’m just happy to still be up with the big club.

“I was happy with the way I played (against Columbus). You never have a perfect game. I definitely made some mistakes but they were manageable. Hopefully I can correct them if I get in again . . . I’m not looking too far ahead. I’m just trying to win games for us.”

Scrivens managed to call his parents after his victory when he got back to Toronto.

“They’re two hours behind but a bit of a party was going on there,” Scrivens said. “I got a lot of text messages. Everybody was telling me how proud they were of me. I was really happy I could play well for them (parents)”

Both defencemen Dion Phaneuf and John-Michael Liles were amazed by how calm and cool Scrivens was in his first regular NHL start.

“Having played in front of a few young goalies over the years, he’s the calmnest I’ve seen,” Liles said. “He didn’t seem to be fazed. He communicated with the defence very well. That was huge. He was able to direct traffic for defencemen he hadn’t played for before.”

Phaneuf said Scrivens played as if he had been in the league for a long time.

“The biggest thing I noticed was how calm he was before the game in the hotel before the game,” Phaneuf said. “He definitely wasn’t uptight. He carries himself with a great demeanor. He’s been great to have up here. He’s been awesome in our locker room and has really fit in well with our team.”

For Scrivens, being calm and cool, has always been part of his make up.

“My parents instilled that in me at a young age and I’m kind of taking all of this in stride,” Scrivens said. “I like to think I’m fairly grounded. I’m also not that young. I’m 25. I played four years of college. I think I’ve figured out what I need to do to be successful,” Scrivens said. “Some nights it will work. Some nights it won’t. You have to be confident in your game.”

Maybe reading too much into it but with all the superlatives it sounds to me like they're pushing for Ben over Gus.

If a fan is critical of the Leafs and smells the roses once in awhile like you said " he is acused of being a wagon jumper ... So the only type of Leaf fan that should exist is one that always smells roses ....

Ironhead ... I love the Leafs but it's the fans that drive me to drink .... Leaf nation they are called .... The nation that might say everything is still fine if their team still doesn't make the playoffs ..
To be critical of your team is fine, but it is also OK to admit the team did something correct.

Who accuses anyone of being a bandwagon jumper if you like what the team is doing ONCE IN A WHILE ?
Not all the time, not in every single post, just once in a while.
For that matter if you claim to be a Leaf fan how can you be a bandwagon jumper when you express joy when they do something well ? You are already a fan.

Also you hold on to things way to long. The Kessel trade for instance. To you it was the crime of the century the way you went on and on and on about it. All the whining you did about that trade and did it turn back time and undo the trade ?

Go back in time, assess the Leafs then, I would still make the trade.
Go back in time knowing what I know now about where the Leafs finish, yes I doubt I would make the trade.

Finally, are you really that thick or do you just like to make people explain things ? Just asking.

Leafs lost 6-2 against Boston with the Monster in net and Scrivens may have just had the best goaltending game of their season.
It should be obvious that Scrivens gets the start tonight against the Bruins.
He will be pumped for his first start at home.

Reimer is currently the projected starter for tonight,s game vs the Bruins, however as I write this there is no indication he is off the IR nor has anyone been sent down.

MAPLE LEAFS' REIMER OUT FOR FORESEEABLE FUTURE

TORONTO – James Reimer remains out for the foreseeable future.

The Leafs starting netminder has not played in two weeks and did not take part in practice on Friday as the team altered its course in his recovery process yet again.

“[He's] kind of I'd say hit a plateau in his recovery so the trainers decided not to ask him to go on the ice,” said Ron Wilson, following the team's workout at Mastercard Centre.

The Leafs have received solid netminding in his absence.

Jonas Gustavsson made five consecutive starts in place of the injured Reimer (3-2-0) before giving way to rookie Ben Scrivens on Thursday night. The 25-year-old Scrivens made 38 saves in his NHL debut, backstopping the Leafs to a 4-1 win, their ninth in thirteen games this season. The sturdy performance of the duo has allowed the club to keep Reimer from rushing back to action, although the ups and downs of his recuperation have made his status somewhat of a mystery.

“If he's not going to face a lot of shots it's better for him to just work out off the ice,” continued Wilson. “I'm just coaching the next game. I'm not concerned about that. I'm not a doctor or a trainer. We've got the healthy guys and they're doing the job so we'll give James plenty of time to recover.

"There's no rush to get him back."

Reimer has been out since Saturday, October 22nd when he was jarred in the mask by the elbow of Canadiens captain Brian Gionta. Initially the team kept him off the ice for a few days before allowing him to return to practice at Madison Square Garden on Thursday, October 26th. He experienced headaches as the workout wore on and was pulled back from on-ice activity over the following two days. (The team also placed him on injured reserve retroactive to the game in Montreal.)

The Manitoba native then returned to the ice on Saturday, October 29th, taking part in the next five on-ice workouts before pulling back on Friday. Wilson noted after Wednesday's morning skate in New Jersey that Reimer felt “gassed” from the workout, but said the team was still hopeful that he'd be able to start in Columbus the following day.

The Leafs initially diagnosed Reimer with “whiplash-like” symptoms, but have since labeled it an “upper-body” injury as Wilson described it on Friday. Reimer was 4-0-1 this season with a 2.58 goals against average, .912 save percentage.

The Leafs are 4-2-0 in his absence with Boston on deck at the Air Canada Centre on Saturday. Reimer has already been ruled out for the game against the Bruins with his status beyond that very much unknown. Since he'll be off the ice this weekend a return against Florida on Tuesday seems unlikely with games against St. Louis and Ottawa also in doubt.

Wilson declined to reveal his starter for Saturday's game against the Bruins.
