As for Todd, what he did was cowardly and brutal, but what do you expect from a guy who was probably taught that way (with hundreds of other Canadian guys) as his ticket to the bigs. Sad commentary on the state of Canadian hockey, but I think it has improved since he came up.

Lots of blame here, the league, the coaches, management, they are all guilty IMHO.

Bring on the world Juniors.

I agree 100 % the coaches are also responsible . From the time kids are 12 yrs old in some levels of hockey violence is encouraged.
Some levels of violence should be policied by the league , beyond that it should be a police matter.

Yup.

And Ranger, I see what you're saying, but Bertuzzi is a great talent to see. You mean to say you can never forgive him for what he did? He lost control, and he would probably be the first to admit it. I bet you he had no idea he was going to do the damage that he did to this guy. If this guy just got up and skated off the ice to his bench would you be saying all that?
I can forgive him for what he did.
Who said I couldn't?
I just think that all the sympathy towards him - this is NOT the same as forgiveness - is TOTALLY misplaced.
The fact is, Steve Moore DIDN'T get up and skate to the bench, so I'm not sure what your point is. That, if Bertuzzi hadn't assaulted him so viciously that we wouldn't be talking about it? No shit.

I hope Steve Moore returns, and don't give a rat's ass about Todd Bertuzzi, frankly.

Imagine Forsberg is in the corner going for the puck. Now imagine Chelios is in behind him trying to take it off of him. Imagine Forsberg throws 3 or 4 elbows at Chelios and the last one hits him square in the mouth. It knocks one of his teeth loose, and Chelios swallows it and dies. Should Forsberg be banned from hockey when those types of elbows happen all the time? Bertuzzi used his fists. And I may be mistaken, but were his gloves not on? That happens all the time.

What I'm saying is let justice be served, then let this guy come back and aim to win the Lady Bing. Whatever! All I'm saying is the guy is sorry and I thought he was a great player since day one.
It's perfectly reasonable to treat circumstances differently when the results are different.
Yep - if a player dies as a result of an otherwise "normal" elbow - not that *any* elbow is "normal" - it's always a penalizable offense - that player should be treated quite differently. Forsberg should, in that case, be punished to the full extent of the law.

Too bad for Bertuzzi that a player he decided to sucker punch was badly injured on the play.
I have NO sympathy for this sort of behaviour, only for the *victim*.

He's sorry all this bad stuff has happened to *him*, not to Steve Moore.

How do you know that? I guess you have never lost your temper before, eh Ranger? I'm going to withdraw from this thread after this point. I know you couldn't give a "rats ass" about Bertuzzi, but I do. He is a great Canadian talent, who made the biggest mistake of his life over a 30 second span. I highly doubt he felt anything good when he saw the stretcher come out and scoop up his damage. I want to see the league make an example out of him. I want to see the league scare other players from doing this kind of thing again.

But I want Bertuzzi to return. He is a fantastic Canadian talent that I do give a "rats ass" about.

Bertuzzi's wife is nothing special. You'd think you would land someone a lot hotter if you had millions of dollars and a professional athlete's physique.

As to Bertuzzi's actions, they way I saw it was:

1. Moore refused to be confronted by Bertuzzi.
2. Bertuzzi got frustrated that Moore wouldn't turn around, so he punched him in the back of the head.
3. No-one knows whether Moore was knocked out by the punch, or by the fall to the ice.
4. The fall to the ice was greatly worsened by Bertuzzi and one of Moore's teammates falling on top of him. I don't believe that Bertuzzi meant to pile on, but rather that he was forced to fall on top of him when the teammate tackled Bertuzzi.

In other words, Bertuzzi meant to punch Moore, but I don't think he meant to seriously injure him. He probably thought that the punch would force Moore to turn around and face him. The fall to the ice, which is mostly responsible for the severity of Moore's injuries, was purely accidental.

That being said, I agree with posters who say that Bertuzzi does not have any "mature" remorse. He's feeling sorry for himself, not for Moore.

I disagree with posters who think that this incident illustrates an unacceptable level of violence in the game, or that throwing a punch is a serious criminal matter. If the police ever even bother to lay charges in a common bar fight, the charges inevitably are dropped or plead to conditional or absolute discharges.

I also disagree with those who prefer so-called "international hockey". International hockey is not particularly well played. It's only exciting because:

1. It's relatively rare.
2. The players are playing for a so-called "world championship".
3. The play is often more wide open because the teams prepare so little for the tournament that their defences are not well organized. Watch a regular season game over in Europe and you'll see that the play is no more wide open than in the NHL.
4. National pride.

I far prefer the brand of hockey played in the NHL, although lot's of improvements could be made. For example, I don't think you have to widen the ice to open up play. All you need to do is restrict the teams to dressing 3 lines instead of 4 (that would also help reduce payrolls). No team could sustain a trap for 60 minutes with only 3 lines. Of course, it's time to reduce the size of goaltender's equipment as well.

I'm satisfied with what happened to Bertuzzi. I think losing a year of salary is more than penalty enough for what is more an error of judgement than a calculated intent to injure.

Sure I've lost my temper. So? I'm still accountable for my actions.

I'll counter by asking you how you know he's sorry? I guess you *know* he's sorry, but I'm just *guessing* that he's not.

I'd rather see Moore return than Bertuzzi, and am more concerned about him.

Moore had been confronted by the Canucks all game long, and had already fought.
Whether or not Moore was injured by the punch or the fall is *totally* moot - it was Bertuzzi's assault which caused his injuries.

So, according to the law, he's TOTALLY responsible. The punch, which caused the entire chain reaction, was NOT purely accidental. In fact, it was arguably TOTALLY premeditated.

Tell me about a "common bar fight" which ends with one of the parties having a broken vertebra and no charges were laid. What bullshit! It's OBVIOUSLY the severity of the injuries caused which has led to the outcry. And Bertuzzi, despite your sophistry, is TOTALLY accountable.

What's particularly galling is that Moore wasn't given his rights as a victim. Galling and baffling. It's all about Todd, all about how poor Todd has suffered enough. Nothing about Moore.

You don't know that it wasn't a calculated intent to injure. You're guessing. The *evidence* - which had the Vancouver players CALLING FOR the attack before the game, then WARNING HIM all through the game, speaks otherwise.

From my point of view, Bertuzzi premeditatedly assaulted Moore and broke his neck. This has NOTHING to do with a hockey game, or even a "common bar fight".

The comment was: If he did anything like that on the streets he'd be in jail, meaning he was doing something illegal if he commited it outside the arena.

By your logic EVERY player who commits an act that would be construed as illegal outside the arena should result in a charge.
By your logic
ALL football players should be charged with assault,
ALL wrestlers should be charged with assault,
ALL fencers (not the kind that put up the wooden one in your backyard) should be charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
I have yet to see anyone in any sport "pull a knife" on an opponent.
All sports involve actions that could be considered illegal outside the arena.

Back to the thread subject: miserable as *ahem* Mrs. Bertuzzi looks, Karla Homolka's too flattering a comparison. To me, she just looks generic, like Bertuzzi got a deal on PuckBunnies (TM) from Crappy Tire.

Speaking of Karla, though, "That 70s Show" makes for disconcerting viewing these days, now that Laura Prepon's in blonde mode for the Paul + Karla movie...

I would like to see everey NHL'r and pro player sign a waiver not to seek legal remedy in the event of injury whether accidental or deliberate. At the same time the heavyweights who are in the league specifically to enforce and fight should be licensed by a provincial/state boxing authority and those with a propensity for concussion would not be allowed on the ice. If they want to fight so be it but they suffer the consequences of injury with no legal recourse. Cheapshot artists without a license to fight would suffer in a court of law should they cause injury. Create a line that neither the fighters nor non fighters could cross. Its the lack of a clear division between the guys who are the tough ones and those who are not that creates the most problems and headlines. Jump all over me if you wish on this but remember the real fighters relish taking on one of their own however when its a wannabe tough guy involved problems develop.
