This is what happens when morons fuck with the designs of automobiles.

You can see from that video that that truck has been modified from its stock form. The truck appears to have been lowered, the suspension has been widened (to make the wheels stick out) and very wide wheels installed. All this works to completely rearrange the dynamic forces acting on the suspension of the vehicle. I guarantee that the no-mind driving that truck just wandered into some hot rod shop and bought a partial kit to make his truck look "cool" without even doing any research as to what the implications to the load stresses on the vehicle would be. (Like getting a heavy duty set of wheel bearings.) You can see the truck has really wide wheels and the front left wheel just flies off. Later, in some weird twist, the severed wheel bounces back into the frame and if you look closely, you will see that the brake rotor is still attached to the wheel. That means that the existing wheel bearing just separated and pulled apart. With a modern sealed bearing, that is really tough to do unless you overload the bearing and the suspension. Either that, or the bearing was so incredibly fucked from high mileage that it let go. Either way, that bearing would have been just screaming loud driving down the road and that douchebag just ignored it. Nothing more dangerous than a moron with no brains and not enough money to do a proper job nor money to fix a fucked wheel bearing.

Better yet, leave the truck alone. Don't fuck with the design. The engineers who designed that truck would have checked every conceivable load combination, but they can't help stupid.

I hope the people in that little Kia are OK.

The 'Country Bubba" wheels are mounted on cheap, Chinese spacer blocks with similar studs and lugs. As djk says, don't fuck with the geometry, brakes etc.

Insult added to injury when the wheel followed the stricken car and driver and hit it again.

I find it shocking that apparently the person in the Kia only had minor injuries. I saw the raw video of this a few days ago and it was jaw-dropping. I couldn't imagine a wheel would send an SUV spinning into the air. It is sort of terrifying when you think about it.

So if this was a normal “accident” or manufacturing problem, the truck would not get a ticket but for this, I am assume there is a charge or ticket that the truck owner can be given?
He should be charged with operating an unsafe vehicle at the least. If the modifications were done by a business it should also be charged if possible.

Possible causes and theory of why the wheel/tire came off the truck.

The frightening thing about this is:

1) It could happen to absolutely anybody, at any time, and
2) There is NOTHING the driver could do about it.
