Well for the few people who said Phil was the #1 golfer in the world, for no go reason, hopefully that puts that silly talk to rest.

He certainly played the course well.

His emotional outburst at the end was hard to watch. I felt really bad for the guy. He was so close to his Dad. I don't think he knew how hard it was going to hit him that he wasn't there until he walked up 18.

Interesting how Nicklaus won at the same course the same year his father died.

By the time he retires he will prove to be the greatest golfer to ever play the game. He has really revolutionized the game and has made others play better, he is a legend. Only 7 more majors and he ties Jack.

I think I heard he is 30 now. Anyone know how many Jack had when he was 30? It looks like Tiger is going to pass the record, and then some.

Jack acknowledged the same likelyhood two or three years back. BTW, Nicklaus had seven before he was 30.

Okay, I'll answer my own question. Nicholas won his 8th major in 1970 when he was 30 years old. Tiger just won his 11th. Well, I guess anything could happen, but he is so good, its hard to imagine him not surpassing 18 majors.

The only thing that will hold Tiger back is motivation. He may decide he wants to have a family and spend more time with them. If he focuses on golf there will be nothing to stop him.

The difference could end up being that Jack had an amazing run after he was 30, culminating in the 1986 Masters, which I still consider one of the top comebacks in sports. Tiger can do it if he wants to enough. He was the most disciplined I can remember seeing him in this tournament.

Good points. Two very big ifs. It takes a lot of emotion and desire to win at that level. No doubt, in addition to amazing skill, motivation and desire has a lot to do with his success thus far. Health can be an issue too. If it was a foregone conclusion, it wouldn't be very interesting, would it?

if tiger stays healthy he will probably beat jack. he is in better shape than jack was (golfers excercise nowadays) so he has a very good shot at being number one of all time.

And just stop to realize... Thanks to his swing coach and his ability to put his ego away for the betterment of his game, he now has proof that a more strategic game (coupled with his power/finesse) will help him to dominate once again. One driver in 72 holes...

Like the commentator kept saying, Jack knew nobody could beat him if he left the ball in the fairway off the tee. Now, if Tiger starts to gain that same belief... He already had the unflappable focus, the unquestionable competitive edge and the creative mind to go with the superior talent. Now there will be confidence in his swing change and a renewed approach to his strategy. Who needs driver when you have a tried and true straight 2 or 3 iron that will go 250+ yards consistently? Or even, a more controlled 3 or 5 wood? With his ability, any second shot from the fairway should put him on the green with a chance at birdie.

But nothing beats having confidence and now that Tiger has regained it, I don't think that he's going to give it up. He was great... then the field got better. Forcing Tiger to improve yet again... Get ready for another Tiger reign of dominance.

So then, anybody care to guess when Tiger will pass Jack?

I say sometime in 2011...
Given his current clip, 2011 seems to add up, but if he keeps that friggin driver in his bag he may speed things up. His driving distance was over 270 while using his driver only once in 72 holes. Wouldn't it be ironic is the guy who set off the trend of the long drive as a means to winning would be the guy who now reverses the trend.

p.s And what was with Sergio's friggin canary outfit? I thought Adidas was leading the pack with its golf fashion this season and for the biggest TV commerical of the year they outfit Sergio in a tight bird suit. Whoever made that decision at Adidas should be canned.

One must keep in mind that with those totally dried out fairways, which were almost as fast as the greens, Tiger got a lot more roll out of his irons off the tee. He won't be getting 270 yards on Augusta's fairways.

The way he played, though, shows that he's a thinking man's champion. He's also a tremendous putter which seems to get overlooked.

I have to say hats off to DiMarco as well. There is no quit in that guy. This was a terrific final round precisely because Chris pushed Tiger every step of the way and didn't fold up like a cheap suit (cogh Phil cough). Tiger's precision ball striking was a thing of beauty.

Oh, and Sergio? I figure he was trying to bling Tiger with his radioactive banana outfit. The bastard. :)

Not to mention, Tiger is a 100 million per year man and already made half a billion fortune in his still young career. Surpassing Jack is just a matter of time. And it is up to his will to decide how much to surpass Jack and take the lead for the future Tigers to catch him up.
