Of course I agree with you. We are much better than Asians/Chinese.
Not so fast. They are way better than the Caucasians in terms of foundation knowledges, skills that are necessary to do the intricate works.

You think why they flock to North america? Because we are better
Again not true. They came here to study to get either a second chance (stiff, cut throat competition to study in undergrads back home) or for the creme of the crop to pursue new knowledge and more importantly freedom to pursue innovation and researches. :)

burt-oh-my!

I GREATLY prefer our system. Let kids be kids for Pete's sake, and have some fun.

I guess I had better say this before those who insist on putting words in others mouths and exaggerating their positions do exactly that to my above comment: NO, I am NOT saying do no work, have no education, play video games all day. But whatever happenned to the pursuit of happiness? Play is important, and at the end of the day life is to ENJOY, not just to ACCOMPLISH.

Violin or Piano, nothing else. If I had a kid and he/she tried to play anything else, I'd kick him or her in the face, what else can you do.

She sounds like a snob.

Never mind the utter time suck of 3 hours a day on instruments when you don't even expect them to make it a career. What a waste, unless they wanted to.
Whatever happened to balance.

She is a snob, a bitch and a failure as a human being... us failures can spot our own.
Career success is all and fine, but there is more to life than that.

There is a book from a dude who went to Harvard for his MBA. "Ahead of the Curve" he pointed out that over and over visiting business leaders would mention their home lives are utter shit, divorce, kids they don't know etc, and they all recommend a greater focus on work life balance, but none of them ever do it, and the majority of students don't bother either.

She is more likely to consider her two daughters as investments like equities, money makers that should the two accomplish something extraordinary, she could take all the credit and needless to say get "dividends" in terms of the monthly "pocket money" from the daughters. They are not considered as individual human beings.

If that's not ulterior motive/self-centered agenda, I don't know what is.

Not uncommon to many Chinese parents having the same mindset and raise their kids that way.

Thankfully, many of the new generation of Chinese parents no longer buy all of these grannies "nonsense" by default.

Career success is all and fine, but there is more to life than that.
LOL, the majority of the Chinese, Mandarin Speaking mainlanders in particular do not buy this what they call BS.

It's in their blood to work like crazy, catch up and more importantly go overboard to demonstrate they are superior to the Caucasians.

Pretty much explain many are in denial of this.

I worked with this one Korean guy one time. A super guy. He told me about his work life back in Korea. Long story short - it was from 7 a.m. till 10 or 11 p.m. EVERY day, weekends, etc. He hated it and said that it was killing him.

Now I work hard. Easily 50 to 60 hours on average per week. Sometimes, 90 hours a week or even 100 hours a week (but that it rare). But I don't want to work 6 or 7 days a week every week without fail. But there are other weeks where I coast. I don't want work to consume me any more than it already does.

When you're dead and gone, they're not going to stand on your grave and say, "He should have worked harder"

+1

BTW I would be shocked some of those employers would be that low and say, "Nah, he's just like disposal utensils or worse used dick turbin."

Everyone says it, but few people act on it.

It seems more important at times to work hard than to be productive.

Basically, he argues that it's more important to teach the kids good values. Success is nice, but it's more important that they turn out to be good people. Not being particularly ambitious, I tend to agree with him.
That's what they taught us in high school hockey. Play nice. Don't hurt the other guy. Winning isn't important. No wonder I was so lousy at hockey. Hee, hee, hee.

The problem in our schools to-day is that not only are we not teaching them the "3 R's" but a lot of bullying (especially with the Internet), stabbings and shootings are happening on and near school property.

Here's the rabbi's rebuttal:

Rabbi Boteach postings are fun to read, even though his politics are cuckoo.

BTW, stay tune when those post 1980s mainland Mandarin speaking Chinese generations take over their country. Many of them may have all the credentials and discipline distilled by "Tiger moms", even the lifestyle or mindset compatible to the Anglo Saxons but in terms of value system and moral code, there is NONE.

Don't be surprised the unintended consequence of this so called Tiger Moms training will be teaching the unscrupulous, immoral and unethical men and women the knowledge and sophistication to lie, cheat and steal, even murder to get what they want down the road.

Simply put, these people have all the potential to go overboard and beat those Wall Street banksters, rendering the latter group bunch of boy scouts/nice guys by comparison.

Two aspects of the "Tiger Mom" approach concern me.

The first is innovation - does the rigid schedule suppress innovation? Does a Mark Zuckerberg create Facebook if he had a Tiger Mom? Sure for some the discipline would be very valuable but for others it may prevent the imagination from really growing.

The second is teamwork - does the "Tiger Mom" approach limit social skills. In business working in teams is becoming more and more important. Teams sports teaches very valuable lessons about teamwork, goal setting and overcoming adversity. Sometimes you advance your career as much by socializing with colleagues, business leaders etc. as you do by grinding at your desk. Being liked and getting along with people are important business skills along with work ethic.

What truly shocks me is that Dr. Chua is receiving death threats following the publication of her book!

As to the original post: I always wonder why western media ALWAYS put the west down, and put others on a pedestal.

When I see Turkish media making Turks feel guilty of the genocides, and claiming Turkish women make bad mothers, as well as Turkish men being wimpy.

Then I will believe this is normal.

Uh, I guess you haven't visited your local shopping mall lately?
It's looking like each generation of kids are getting stupider and stupider.
