One of the highlights of the film "Brassed Off" -- Rodrigo's 'Orange Juice' concerto. (The film is about a coal mine closure in South Yorkshire (where all the top brass-bands are based). In the 1920s there were well over a million coal-miners in Britain. Now only 3 mines are left, employing a few hunded.)
The last underground coal-mine in UK closed 18 December 2015.
"On Saturday 19 December thousands of people turned out for a march in Yorkshire to commemorate the end of deep coal mining in the UK and, specifically, Kellingley's last shift the day before. Starting at Knottingley Town Hall the last miners, their families and many former miners marched to the Social Club."
There are some open-cast workings left, but poor quality coal.
40% of electricity generated in Britian still comes from coal power stations. Most is now imported -- 55% of it from Russia.
