The Duet from The Pearl Fishers holds a special place for me. Some of the best singers remain unknown, such was the case with Nehal Fonseka. I had developed a friendship with him in the late 80's, he is a Sinhalese Operatic Tenor. He was ahead of his time, had he been my age he would have become a sensation in the opera world - he was, probably still is, that good. He and Giuseppe Macina sang the duet at a citizen's show at The Columbus Center, I've never forgotten it.

Albert Einstein passed away 12 days ago in 1955. There's a new mini-series about him on NG starring the great Geoffrey Rush as Al. If the show makes him out to be a musical genius as well, that's false. At least that's what his friend Arthur Rubinstein said. Music was part of Einstein's humanism, he never missed an opportunity to play. For Artie it was it was a frustrating experience, Al had problem with tempo and kept missing his que.

Finally the frustrated Artie said, "Albert for God's sake try counting to 3".

So hard to pick just one and Ceiling Cat beat me to one that popped to mind. So I'll pick a more recent live version.

The most beautiful melody ever written?

Not everyone shares the same tastes, of course. But this as to be a contender. Not just the melody itself, but the performance -- not to mention the setting
