Toronto... it was expected. Ottawa...it was unheard of.

It's so odd looking at both rosters and seeing Ottawa doing so bad. I expected them in the top 3.
The Senators are mighty lately with Ray Emery playing like he is the best goalie in the entire league. For some reason, Ottawa always jinx the Buffalo Sabres in regular season games, as evident by their whipping the Sabres 4 times in a roll with a 6-3 convincing victory Wednesday night. In many ways, Buffalo deserved to lose since they hardly played the entire 60 minutes. Come playoffs, these teams can become entirely different animals. So we shall see.

To Ottawas credit, they where/are struggling, but bringing in Cromerie.. sjows they are trying to do something about it...

If Ottawa catches stride in the playoff stretch it could get interesting ..

Currently the Senators are second in the Northeast division with 67 points and 4th in the Eastern Conference. If they stay the course, chances are they will go to playoffs as 4th or 5th seed. It will be interesting to see if they will choke this year once they get to the playoffs.

So if a 4th loses to a 5th or vice versa...that is considered choking?

Interesting question on choking here. It is fair to say the Senators are a team stockpiled with talented players. History has shown that they lack grit and determination come playoffs and they flopped. The hockey experts certainly think very high of the Senators this season. For example, in the pre-season, sportsbook.com give the Senators a 6-1 odds of winning the Stanley Cup in 2007 with the Sabres only at 12-1. http://www.covers.com/articles/sb_articles.aspx?theArt=2602&t=0

Another example is The TSN 2006-7 NHL Predictions, which you can find with this link: http://www.sportsnetwork.com/default.asp?c=sportsnetwork&page=nhl/misc/2006-07predictions.htm All 10 so called experts predicted the Senators will go to playoffs. Two thought the Senators will be Conference and Stanley Cup winner. Two thought they will be Division winner.

So with all these great expectations, if they lost in the first round of playoffs, most people will agree that they choke again even if they happened to be the 4th or 5th seed. ;) Now, it is also fair to say if they advance further and further into playoffs, say conference final or even Stanley Cup final and they falter, then the choke factor obviously will be less prominent, especially if they are not expected to win the Stanley Cup.

The vast majority of the 'so-called' experts did not pick the Sens to be in the cup final so it can't be considered choking if they don't make it...not matter how close they get. I guess we have a different definition of choking. IMO it's when you have a big lead in a game or series & you blow it. I don't believe the Sens 'choked' against the Sabres in last year's playoffs. Buffalo finished only 3pts behind Ottawa in a close race. Every game of the series was decided by one goal & 3 of the 5 games went to OT. The Sabres started slow last year but came on strong & peaked at the end of the season. They continued their strong play into this season. It is interesting to note that the Sens & Sabres have switched their reg. season positioning from last year!

20 games, whatever dude!

Just another bitter Leafs fan watching his team slide out of playoff contention.

I'm not a Leaf fan but I would say at least 10 games. Imagine what could have happened if Lapierre did not have a Visor. Remember how many games Marty Mcsorley received for a stick to the head?

They only gave Marty Turco 4 games for slashing Ryan Smith in the face, breaking his nose.

Perhaps we do have a difference of definition of choking. Mine is really a very common sensical definition based on the professional experts' expectations on how the Senators will fare in the current hockey season. Other than the expectations cited in my earlier post, here are some more:

http://www.docsports.com/2006/2006-2007-nhl-predictions.html

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?page=screenshots060928

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/preview2006/news/story?id=2607868

http://www.msgnetwork.com/content_n...ticle&sports=ice-hockey&team=other&league=nhl

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/scott_wraight/09/28/power.rankings1/index.html

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/feature/?fid=2844&hubname

Based on these predictions/expectations from the experts, it is reasonable to say that a vast percentage of them expect the Senators to do well based on the team make up and the talent the players have. Of course, If they failed the expectations/predictions, they choke. It is as simple as that. It really does not matter what seed they are and what seeds they play. It also does not matter how far and how deep they go into playoffs. It is no secret that the Senators are criticised over the years for having no 'heart' during playoffs. The lack of grit, toughness, and determination contributed to their playoffs exits. If the Senators somehow master these characters, they will be a very dangerous playoff team for sure.

Well, in the NHL, there's a difference between what a player deserves and what he gets in terms of discipline. It has already been established that the NHL do not treat all players equally when it comes to discipline. They tend to look the other way when a superstar needs to be disciplined since those are the players that bring revenue. Has anyone seen the Ovechkin hit from behind on Daniel Briere this season? He got nothing. Why? Coz he’s an attraction. Now, if for some reason Sidney Crosby would to lose his cool and deliberately smack someone in the head with his stick causing a major concussion, it wouldn’t surprise me if he gets only 3 games or less. That’s just the reality of the NHL.

hmmm.. any team losing to Buffalo in the past two seasons isn't really "choking" ...

and the sens are improving as the season progresses.. not Dominating till spring and falling away into the playoffs...
