Here
I have been a baseball aficionado for more years than I care to admit.

Last night was one of, if not THE, most exiting and entertaining game I have ever watched. Only Carter's home run comes close!

Agreed. I really like the Vin scully first pitch act before the game. One thing that would make it better is have Lasorda come take him out for the relief pitcher. Still shows why Scully last 67 years.

Farrell and Girardi kicked to the curb! Anymore A L East managers on the block? These two finished 1-2
I feel sorry for Girardi. I always thought he was a classy guy.

He got given the wreck of the aging A-Rod Yankees and had to make the best of it. And then NYY surprisingly bounced back early this year with the arrival of Aaron Judge. Judge and the pitchers carried an otherwise so-so team to game 7 of the LCS. I can't see how any other manager would have done any more.

and we continue to be satisfied with the mediocrity of our manager and coaching staff
Playoffs in 2 or 3 years is mediocre?

And we have a payroll lower than Yanks and Sox.

playoffs 2 of 5 years, no world series...and at least one year as the betting favourite to win it all.

Don't feel sorry for Girardi. He's going to the Marlins working for his buddy,Derek Jeter. This situation is very similar to the Leafs when Bab left Det and signed a big contract with Toronto a few years back.
This could take shape in a year or two though. Girardi might decide to take a year off to be with his family. Last time I heard his family is in Florida! LOL

Unfortunately he did not inherit a playoff worthy team.

He took them to the playoffs twice in the last 3 years.

At 5"6' is Altuve the shortest #3 hitter in the history of MLB??

I cant think of any others who are even remotely close to that height
Phil Rizzuto of the Yankees same height not sure what batting order but he played short stop. Then there was that midget who played one at bat and walked, he's the reason why all contracts have to be confirmed by the commission before a player can play.

So 2013 was not a playoff worthy team? They were favoured to win it all by many. Spoiler alert: they finished last.

How tall was Wee Willie Keeler? And the point I am trying to make is that 3 playoff teams this year were not happy with results and are making a managerial change, We ran last all year in a year that the lovable Mr. Gibbons was given a contract extension (yes I know we ended up 4th). Girardi hates losing, Gibbons accepts it imho

It was the first year a lot of these guys played together and if I recall, there were a bunch of injuries and players who seriously underperformed from previous years, Josh Johnson, Dickey and his Cy Young, Drabek, Romero, Bonifacio etc. Those were more on AA than Gibby.

But you are right that hopes were very high at the beginning of the year. I remember Bautista saying "I don't see what can go wrong." I think that was the kiss of death as everything did go wrong. But again, I believe most of it was poor acquisitions by AA.

I think it was Eddie Goedel or something like that for the White Sox.

Which means Shapeero does as well.

Question, do you think this year's opening day roster was as good as those of '15 and'16? And how much did Shapeero try to improve the teams over the course of those seasons?

Middle infield was pathetic and outfield was very weak. Goins, Barney and Refsnyder at SS and 2B and outfield of Carrera, Aoki, Upton, Pearce, and a subpar JBats and no bat Pillar. A combined LaRussa, Durocher, Connie Mack and Joe Torre could not have won with those guys.

Nah, Rizzuto was a good ballplayer, but he was never a #3 hitter.

That midget you mentioned was Eddie Gaedel, a publicity stunt by St. Louis who only made one plate appearance and walked. He died at age 36 unemployed and was beaten to death, very sad:

for this year, there was a drop from Encarnacion to Morales, but to a large extent that was made up for by Smoak. Pitching might have been better with Sanchez and Osuna and Stroman having more experience.

I am watching a world series where the managers were not star players, but they have proven to be excellent managers. There must be more like Hinch and Roberts out there somewhere. Maybe De marlo Hale? John Gibbons is a likable old baseball guy - but the message still is - were not as concerned about results.

In my opinion a HUGE mistake to NOT go with a 3-man starting rotation in the World Series.

4-man rotation = a BIG mistake!!

The 15 - 14 Jays win over the Phillies was more exciting in my opinion. That was a helluva game.

I remember that game like it was yesterday.

'Wild Thing' Mitch Williams got many death threats after he gave up that Carter dinger btw
