Tariffs on Canada delayed for 30 days. Edit: The tariff war has begun.

The last time the GOP controlled the white house, senate, and the house after an election was 2016.

Buckle up and enjoy the ride. This will create a lot of buying opportunities.
If I recall, Musk did announce that the plan was to cause a recession (at least), so yes, rich people will have lots of buying opportunities if they accomplish that.

That....might be true. I can see the share prices of a lot of companies taking massive hits. How will Trump spin a market correction when he used the S&P as a proxy for how good the US economy was....

Now, on that note.....I wonder....why is Trump allowing Musk and company to push the US into a recession? I mean, they're killing jobs throughout the public sector, and that will have a catastrophic effect on small towns across the US...and likely push us into a recession, even before tariffs are done. Is it just inept policy? Is it that they are so ideologically focused that they just don't see the ramifications of what they are doing.....Or....is it that Trump and his cabinet are ultra wealthy and they can weather out the chaos...

Part of me thinks this is a plan to crush workers. Think about it this way: Coming out of the pandemic, workers had the best bargaining position in a generation. There were more jobs than workers, and they negotiated great contracts (GM, UPS, etc.,). Wages increased. Now, there will be hundreds of thousands of unemployed people looking for work. Supply and demand will cause wages to plummet. The gap between rich and poor will only grow. Oligarchy will rule the roost...

I think the bottom line here is that the US middle class is going to cease to exist. We're going to see a lot of economic chaos here. How long will Trump have support? How much of a blue wave will hit in the mid-term elections? It will be very interesting to see...

And....to all the nay sayers to this....tell me what you think is going to happen...
Yes. That's basically it.

You can think about it as the Andrew Mellon quote from the Depression.

“Liquidate labor, liquidate stocks, liquidate farmers, liquidate real estate. It will purge the rottenness out of the system. High costs of living and high living will come down. People will work harder, live a more moral life. Values will be adjusted, and enterprising people will pick up the wrecks from less competent people.”

These tariffs have to be completely illegal under the existing trade agreements and under US law. I am guessing that Congress has to ratify all tariffs and trade deals, with the exception of very, very urgent measures.
I think the President can bypass Congress if the tariffs are in response to an emergency.
One of the reasons Trump just keep saying things are emergencies.

The reason being is that Canada is very soft on the border and not fully enforcing the law. If our border agents were enforcing the law, then the reported numbers would be much higher
No way possible we are shipping anything close to what Mexico is shipping.

In fact I'd say more drugs and guns come from the US.

We've had this conversation before and this is where I say "But the emergency must be a credible one and not a nonsensical one".

The prior decision involved Nixon placing trade restrictions on Japanese imports and that was a credible emergency. Placing tariffs on Canada over a couple of lbs of fentanyl is not.

You may have gathered from my other posts that I believe Trump is no longer mentally competent. I believe his entourage has convinced him that he can cut back the civil service radically, impose tariffs on the rest of the world and abolish income tax. Finding pretences to tariff every other country is part of this demented, nonsensical bullshit scheme.

It's clearly non-workable, fantasy world insanity.

And this is where I point out there is no mechanism requiring that.
It isn't like Canada where the government has to submit justification for declaring an emergency.
The best you are going to get is bringing it to the courts and they can always say "it's a political question, not our problem".

Trump's thoughts on Pee Pee. I am curious if the MAGA board members will jump on board and diss Pee Pee now.

Trump's reply? Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre needs to more fully embrace Trump.

"I think his biggest problem is he's not a MAGA guy, you know? I mean, he's really not. He's not a Trump guy at all," the U.S. president replies.

"Pierre, I just don't know. I don't like what he's saying about me. It's just not positive about me."

Trump is threatening to batter Canada's economy with a variety of tariffs and has repeatedly mused about pressuring it to become the 51st U.S. state. Like the Liberals, Poilievre promised he would retaliate with counter-tariffs.

Trump lamented that many people talk tough about him, then learn to regret it.

"They all make that mistake. You know. They think they're going to be the tough guy and they're going to knock out Trump, and they end up getting the hell beat out of 'em."

That's another 20% polling hit to PeePee.

He's already lost the real Canadians because he's a spineless Trump ass licker. This will cost him the Maple Magas and he'll be left with single digit polling and no seats in the House at all.

If Trump had half a brain he'd build PeePee up in order to get an ass licker as PM. But Trump's too stupid to see the plays.

So far, the courts are ruling against him - aside from some of the firings cases.

They have.
And he appears to have been ignoring them in some cases.
One court even ordered them to provide proof that the funds had been restored.
The Supreme Court weighed in and waived that deadline, which means we will soon see if the Supreme Court is going to say the Administration can't be bound by lower court orders (in this case, they will say, letting the exceptions trickle out one by one if this is the route they are taking.)
And, of course, we have Senators and the VP starting to weigh in with the idea that the Executive branch shouldn't have to obey the courts.

So we will see how this plays out.
