As for things like religion and caste - no he wasn't remotely casteist or extremist. He was a secularist. And even though he came from a Brahmin family (upper caste), he cleaned toilets etc, which at that time were reserved for the lower castes. In that way he united India while advocating non-violence and simplicity, which is why he is considered a great nationalist, politician and human.
