Care you explain what this means? I'm curious.
In the movie, the 15-year old William Miller is assigned by Rolling Stone to go out on tour with an up-and-coming rock band called Stillwater and write an article about them. Lester Bangs is one of the most important and influential rock journalists at the time and serves as William's mentor. William goes out on tour with the band, befriends them, loses his virginity, meets the girl of his dreams, and basically gets a behind-the-scenes look at the rock n' roll lifestyle. However, he finds that he grows to like the members of the band, especially the lead guitarist, and can't bring himself to write anything negative about them. What Lester says in the quote I referenced is that the band intentionally befriended him, made think he was cool, so he would only write flattering things about them.
I believe the connection between that quote and your situation with a SP who gets you to buy her dinner, drinks etc, in exchange for an illusion of friendship would be obvious no?
I don't know the exact specifics of your situation, it could very well be a genuine friendship, but it does sound a bit like she's taking you for a ride, metaphorically speaking
BTW, the movie ends with William writing an "unmerciful" and truthful article about the band, the article being praised by his editors, but then the band (who William thought were his friends) denying 90% of the article because it doesn't make them look 'cool' enough. Eventually the girl who William loves (a groupie) who also loves the band's guitarist, persuades the guitarist to visit William at his house and apologize for selling him out. He then contacts Rolling Stone to explain that William's article is the honest truth
Excellent movie, btw, one of the best of the 2000s
