I'd never think that a woman was asking for it, or deserved to be raped. However, there has to be some common sense in the debate. Does a very sexually provocatively dressed girl deserve to get sexually assaulted if she's in a bar/club full of drunken men? No. Was it perhaps a poor risk assessment on her part? I know that the conventional wisdom is that rape isn't about sex, it's about control. However, "sexual assault" by definition covers pretty much any unwanted sexual touching. Most rapes would probably happen regardless of how the woman was dressed, but I'm sure more common sexual assaults may not.

Should it happen? No. However, I don't like that there a message being sent out that women can dress as they wish in any environment and be protected from being touched by some invisible bubble of feminist indignation. Sure, go after the neanderthal cops and judges that think that women "were asking for it," but also teach women to be smarter about the choices they make.

Do I have the right to get dressed up like a circus clown and then get upset that kids come up to me wanting me to make balloon animals for them? I have the right to dress however I want....

Feminist Indignation? Huh? why dont we teach men to not be neanderthals and not fondle and rape provocatively dressed women?? wouldnt that be the actual answer to the problem? Last time I checked, men had brains. why dont they just use them more?

This debate has been done to death. Women should realize that they are increasing their risk of being sexually assaulted by dressing provocatively and men should realize that sexual assualt is a crime no matter how the victim is dressed. Is there much more to say?

Not sure the men with the brains are the main problem.

This is a topic I'm very familiar with, for 20 years I was a doorperson at alot of bars in Toronto, The Nobbhill, Glenn Eagles Tavern, Larrys Hide Away, just to name a view. Now I agree with r_s426, that women don't ask or deserve to be raped or sexually assaulted, however, imho the women have to take some responsibility. When I was doing the door, you wouldn't believe what these women were wearing, talking about provocative, WOW !,Just to get some drunken fool to spend his money on her, then laugh at him when the night is over because he thought he was gett'en some , The word is cockkteaser and it's not right. I have a daughter that is 16 and my wife and I make sure that she is properly dressed when she goes out. Now all that being said, women can dress sexy and not come off as being slutty ( my daughter, wife for example ). To quote r_s426 It shouldn't happen, however I don't like the fact that women are protected from taking any responsibity for there poor decision making, ending up in a poor risk assessment. I'm just saying.

Except there is no evidence at all that dressing sexy actually does increase the risk of being raped.rapists don't rape because they are horny, they rape because it makes them feel powerful. They also choose their target opportunistically not based on attractiveness.

anyway I just thought terbites might like to know a bunch of women are planning to dress slutty and march on the street.

and men should realize that a skanky dressed hottie is not an invitation for them to violate her.

Of course it's not the same thing... and I wasn't trying to trivialize sexual assault.

Are you going to dress in a 3 piece suit, wear a Rolex, and walk through Regent Park in the middle of the night? Men have brains... they should know better than to rob you! You have the right not to be robbed. Is that going to stop some animal from robbing you? No.

r_s426, a woman walking alone at night through Regent Park is putting herself at risk REGARDLESS of what she is wearing. Wearing something slutty does not make her risk any greater. Certainly women should take responsibility for their safety and not put themselves in dangerous situations--but dress has got nothing to do with rape.

I believe that a woman dressed slutty in a club is more likely to be GROPED, but she is *not* more likely to be raped. There is actually data on this that Gen posted in the other thread on this topic.

The idea that the way a woman dresses has anything to do with whether or not she gets raped is actually a myth.

That's why this thing pisses me off. As someone who's very protective of the women in his life, it pisses me off that they aren't also encouraging women to make better choices. Should ALL men be able to control themselves??? Yes. Will they? No. Some people are animals, and they will do whatever they want regardless of law or legal consequences.

I'm just saying, teach more women to be smart and protect themselves.

I was just making an example of poor risk assessment. I used the example of robbery, not rape. Most people would probably agree that the person in the example I gave wasn't using the best risk assessment.

Many women that are the victims of violent crimes could have avoided them by doing a better risk assessment of the situation. Of course, more than how they dress comes into play.

I for one do not have an issue with women making balloon animals for scantily clad circus clowns. Boy, this thread sure requires a lot of reading!
