It's a false equivalence because Trump said it's no big deal, it's just a flu...no it's not real, it's actually a hoax. How on earth is that the same as the Swedish government telling citizens to exercise caution, practice distancing, wash your hands, and work from home if you can? Also closing certain institutions, some malls, fining certain establishments that exceeded capacity and even closed them down.I am not arguing whether there is an equivalence. Someone
suggested Trump is essentially responsible for the death
of tens of thousands of people. I am questioning if the Swedish
government can be hold responsible as well for adopting a
strategy of fighting the pandemic without a *real* lock down.
Trump did make remarks devoid of common sense. But what he
said wasn't official announcement of the government on
how people should deal with the virus. America is a free
country. Conformity is not in American's DNA. People didn't
have to take Trump's stupid remarks seriously.
I have no idea what different demographics and refugee
population has to do with the astonishingly higher death rate
in Sweden by comparison to its neighbours. I only know a *real*
lock down in Sweden should have been no more challenging
than in Denmark and Finland.
Trump told people to jump into the fire. There is a difference. You're equating a man telling people to have sex without a condom because AIDs doesn't exist, with another stating you should use the condom because AIDs does exist? You could argue that the other should force the condom into the person's hand, but it's still not the same.
Trump knows his base. His base are mindless and listen to everything he says. So too the governors who are beholden to him - like DeSantis. Look at FOX news and what they transmit to the populace. Oh yeah, they don't have to listen to him, but nether does the killer who was told/encouraged to murder someone by the person whose every word they hang on.
As for the demographics, the communities that were hit hard in Sweden aren't present in neighbouring Norway and Denmark. Germany, Belgium and France are more comparable. Only Germany performed well out of those. France and Belgium were locked tight and didn't. They in fact have much higher death rates than Sweden. Being mere neighbours have very little do with anything. Many countries with neighbours who employ the same strategies but they get different results. Germany vs France? Portugal vs Spain?
Added to that, the majority of the dead in Sweden were over 75 and from care homes. They failed with those people. A hard lock down wasn't preventing that. Another thing I had read somewhere was that most of Denmark's flu deaths occurred just before the pandemic hit big time, and missed Covid, while Sweden had a big drop in flu deaths before Covid hit.
Sweden made mistakes. Trump was malicious.
