Sharon Osbourne has voiced her disdain at receiving U2’s new album for free via Apple’s iTunes downloading service, insisting the automatic addition of Songs Of Innocence to her music library is an “invasion” of her privacy.

The Irish rockers accepted a deal worth a reported $100 million from Apple bosses to offer up their new release for free to its half a billion iTunes customers around the world last week, as part of the marketing campaign for the tech giant’s new iPhone 6 and iWatch devices.

However, not everyone appreciated the U2 giveaway - rapper Tyler, The Creator recently compared waking up with Songs of Innocence on his phone to contracting a sexually transmitted disease, and on Monday night, Osbourne took aim at the band for selling out to get its music heard.

Taking to Twitter.com, Osbourne ranted, “U2 you are business moguls not musicians anymore. No wonder you have to give your mediocre music away for free cause no one wants to buy it... PS, btw (by the way) you are just a bunch of middle age political groupies... (sic)”.

On Tuesday, Osbourne opened up further about the reason for her tirade during an episode of her U.S. daytime show The Talk, explaining she would have liked the option of accepting the download instead of having it added to her music library without her knowledge.

She said, “(They) give it away for free, whether you want it or not... It fills up space on your iPhone... This is an invasion of my private space, my entertainment space...!”

The rock matriarch went on to insist that U2’s decision to give away their new material only causes more problems for the music industry, which is already struggling with falling sales figures, making it harder for new artists to survive.

She continued, “They set a precedent that music is disposable, it’s just another piece of software and it’s nothing, you should give it away for free.

“Sorry guys... there’s a whole new breed of artist coming up that need that money to survive to be able to continue to create. We’re not all billionaires, we’re not all in your world. So stop with you’re ’doing us a favour by giving it away for free’. Keep it to yourselves!”

Apple executives have since responded to the backlash from some iTunes users by sharing instructions on how to delete Songs of Innocence from their devices.

Who voted her as "rock matriarch"? What the fuck has she ever created?
It is who she fucked that is her claim to fame. Her credibility is not based on music accomplishments. File her with Paris Hilton and the Kardashians as non-productive media whores.

I love U2. Been a huge fan since 83. I have all their albums and I will buy the new one too and if they tour, I'll be the first one in line.

But.....

I agree with Osborne, it should be a choice for the iTunes subscribers (I am not one, never have been, never will be) to decide whether they want to download U2's new album or not. It's very presumptuous of U2 and Apple to do this.

Lastly, U2 are a long way from their former selves. Bono has become this extreme capitalist worth supposedly now more than a billion dollars through his investment house (Elevation Holdings).

U2 (and Bono in particular) are a long way from Rock and Roll.

100% ^^^

Who gives a rat's ass what she thinks, and to call it an invasion of privacy is beyond ridiculous. It's not U2's fault for accepting Apple's offer of $100 million. Any band would have done the same thing. We wouldn't hear a peep from her if it was a Black Sabbath album showing up on her iTunes. She's an attention whore, nothing more.

A simple solution to those who are offended. If you don't like it delete it, end of story. Talk about first world problems!

Make sure to talk to your bank manager first. Last time I was offered floor seats, they were 500 each. No arena show is worth that kind of money.. but people keep paying.

I am no fan of Sharon, but without her Ozzy would be just another 60s casualty (actually, maybe that should be "just another *poor* 60s casualty"). She rebuilt his career and from what I can tell, has credibility as a manager for that alone.

I think she is pretty much bang on in her comments.

Au contraire, it's worth what people are willing to pay. Same goes for a painting, sculpture or car for that matter. Nobody is forcing you to buy a ticket.

I beg to differ, she just likes the sound of her own voice and is trying to make herself relevant. "It's an invasion of privacy" and "It fills up space on your iPhone". Is she too stupid to figure out how to delete it? Talk about a drama queen. Her life must be pretty boring if this is the type of thing she complains about. If anything, her beef should be with Apple, not U2.

I always found the business of rock n roll contradictory to the the true spirit of it. But then again that's part of the appeal.

It is a business. Always has been always will be.

You have these struggling artists who would give their left nut (s) to make it big. To have their music accessible and listened to by millions of fans. But that usually goes with making millions (or billions) of dollars.

Then many critics call them 'sell outs' because of that.

I remember hearing Joe Strummer (RIP) of the Clash tell the story that after they signed their first big deal they were walking home and he turned to Mick Jones and said ''Now that we've got all this money, what are we going to sing about....?".

I guess the cash turns them into rebels without a cause.

But on the otherhand, who wouldn't have wanted to be a 'Rock God' and live the life of excess that they did? You only go around once and if I could be Robert Plant or Keith Richards in another life, well sign me up.

Bono is too busy these days telling multi national corporations and rich folk to donate large to charities then he goes home and counts his millions.

^^^^^^^^^^^ this.....

It's actually a pretty good album, it only downloaded if you have your setting set to automatically download new purchases (which I don't) and an album takes so little space this is click whore worthy....
