Self Checkout in stores

I use them all the time but this X-Mas I noticed people standing in line and the self checkouts were under used. Are people scared of them? I have noticed seniors seem to have the most trouble with the new systems.

In the laboratory.
I think many seniors feel left out of the revolution in electronic devices. The emphasis seems always on making things smaller and with lettering harder to read. As well, the quality of technical writing is accompanying such devices is usually abysmal. There's little ability in evidence for understanding the situation of new users.

Of course, much of the foregoing doesn't specifically apply to self-checkout machines but I think seniors just get discouraged in general from trying these sorts of innovations. They think they're just for the young.

I used to live in Atlanta, GA. When I compare Toronto and Atlanta, I see much more self check out systems in Atlanta than in here Toronto.
I live in North York, and the only store that I can remember having the system is loblaw in Bayview village. I dont remember seeing it in any other stores that I have visited.

IMO, Toronto is lacked in use of technology development and other developments compare to big cities in North America.

it's Canada versus the US not a Toronto issue, Big US chains - Home Depot, Wlamart etc roll out technology in their home country not in a canadian subsidiary. I have seen self check out at Loews, Sobey's, Depot, Wal-Mart as well as Loblaws

I haven't been to any other cities in Canada, so I did not want to use "Canada" in my statement. The way I look at it, Toronto is a big metropolitan city like any other cities in North America. When I compare Toronto and the rest of the big metroplitan cities, I think Toronto is under developed. There is so much developments that could and can be done in Toronto. I'm not even impressed with TTC as a public trasnportation in this big metropolitan city.
However, I give it to TTC for the latest improvement on the arrival schedule, security cameras.

I can attest to that. I was working in Atlanta, gawd had to be 8 yrs ago? when I found self checkouts at Homo Depot. Just this (last) year was the first appearance of self checkout here.

I love em, positively LOVE them because so many people don't use them and seeing as how I'm at the depot 30 times a week, it's a blessing.

What I hate about them (in typical canadian fashion) is that there are almost always problems with them. HD for eg they typically have 2 or more that are:
1) Cash Only
2) Debit only
3) rebooting
4) out of service

One thing I wish HD would allow you to do is put in quantities. I buy all kinds of fasteners and HATE scanning one fricken bolt and nut at a time.....(or gear clamps, or copper pipe fittings or .....)

I don't use self checkouts unless there is a huge line. staffed lines are faster even if one person with average amount of purchases is ahead of you.

I look at self check outs as me having to work for the company for free. They pay a cashier now I do the work and get no discount. As you noted it can be quicker since they are sometimes open but when you get a lineup of self checkers who are not used to the system it will be slower.
If I am doing the work then give me a discount or a bonus for increasing the profit margin of the store. Part of the idea of a store is to provide service if i have to find the goods myself then checkout myself what in store service is provided?

Actually, the equipment cost is much higher than a staffed register and they still need people to maintain it (but as I have found that isn't always the case lol).

Yeah, dummies using the self checkout can really hold up the process but I tell you, I can get in, get my stuff and out in record time with self checkouts where if I am stuck in a manned checkout? I'm there 10x as long.

As for manned checkouts being faster, that's a crock unless you're buying something that can't be put through the scanner (like a sheet of plywood, fridge, air conditioner).

Human interaction is important.
Someone will loose their job when people use these machines and increase the profit margin of the company.

Screw a cashier's job, when I'm buying material for a customer I"M LOSING MONEY and the faster I can get in and out of the store, the better for me.

Now if they had contractor only checkout lanes, I'd tend to agree but Homo Depot doesn't even enforce the contractor only parking spots so they aren't ever going to do that.......

Don't get me started on the TTC. Why can't they post the bus number at the bus stop. All they have is a vertical post that says "TTC". I had to wait until the bus arrived and then asked the driver if this is bus 99.

Self Checkouts are here to stay and will eventually replace human cashiers. I have to agree the technology doesn't always work 100%.
"Please place item in the bag" It's in the f**king bag!!!

At our local Canadian Tire the self checkouts were closed for 3 days because an employee was sick. She is the only person who knows how to cashout the machines.

LOL I won't go to no frills because it's a dump......

and yeah, when it comes to me turning a profit in my biz, yeah it's all about me me me (which is why I can give such good pricing to my customers which is why they keep coming back for more....).

I hate being placed in a position that cost me money because some bone head home owner missed the sale by a day and wants to argue with the cashier about it......

The few times I've used self checkout it's been quick and painless and saved me time.

Two thumbs up from me!
