I use them all the time but this X-Mas I noticed people standing in line and the self checkouts were under used. Are people scared of them? I have noticed seniors seem to have the most trouble with the new systems.
it's Canada versus the US not a Toronto issue, Big US chains - Home Depot, Wlamart etc roll out technology in their home country not in a canadian subsidiary. I have seen self check out at Loews, Sobey's, Depot, Wal-Mart as well as Loblawsgentle_lover said:IMO, Toronto is lacked in use of technology development and other developments compare to big cities in North America.
I haven't been to any other cities in Canada, so I did not want to use "Canada" in my statement. The way I look at it, Toronto is a big metropolitan city like any other cities in North America. When I compare Toronto and the rest of the big metroplitan cities, I think Toronto is under developed. There is so much developments that could and can be done in Toronto. I'm not even impressed with TTC as a public trasnportation in this big metropolitan city.mac said:it's Canada versus the US not a Toronto issue, Big US chains - Home Depot, Wlamart etc roll out technology in their home country not in a canadian subsidiary. I can attest to that. I was working in Atlanta, gawd had to be 8 yrs ago? when I found self checkouts at Homo Depot. Just this (last) year was the first appearance of self checkout here.gentle_lover said:I used to live in Atlanta, GA. I live in North York, and the only store that I can remember having the system is loblaw in Bayview village. I dont remember seeing it in any other stores that I have visited.

Actually, the equipment cost is much higher than a staffed register and they still need people to maintain it (but as I have found that isn't always the case lol).my2cents said:I look at self check outs as me having to work for the company for free. They pay a cashier now I do the work and get no discount. As you noted it can be quicker since they are sometimes open but when you get a lineup of self checkers who are not used to the system it will be slower.
If I am doing the work then give me a discount or a bonus for increasing the profit margin of the store. Part of the idea of a store is to provide service if i have to find the goods myself then checkout myself what in store service is provided?
Screw a cashier's job, when I'm buying material for a customer I"M LOSING MONEY and the faster I can get in and out of the store, the better for me.alex52 said:Human interaction is important.
Someone will loose their job when people use these machines and increase the profit margin of the company.

Now if they had contractor only checkout lanes, I'd tend to agree but Homo Depot doesn't even enforce the contractor only parking spots so they aren't ever going to do that.......
Don't get me started on the TTC. Why can't they post the bus number at the bus stop. All they have is a vertical post that says "TTC". I had to wait until the bus arrived and then asked the driver if this is bus 99.gentle_lover said:However, I give it to TTC for the latest improvement on the arrival schedule,
The Loblaws at Queens Quay had self-checkout as far back as 2005tboy said:Just this (last) year was the first appearance of self checkout here
LOL I won't go to no frills because it's a dump......Dani said:All about you you you..(LOL)
I hate em. If I am paying they can scan ir for me.
I will not go to No Frills because the woman at check out expects me to bag my own..The nerve...
Soon I will be growing my own and paying for the privilige.![]()
