That's the right attitude rather than give yourself the right to steal. Don't like the store for whatever reason then don't go.

When they force you to work, how much have you gotten "paid" ? Theft whether it is internal or external is already factored into pricing. Is it worth it for someone to risk getting a criminal record for theft under $5000? Or perhaps the thief is already known to the police and or has a criminal record so that another conviction is not a big deal in their estimation and situation.
I have seen in the US big signs over the cashiers check out that if there are over 4 people waiting in line they will open a second cashier line up for the clients. I have never seen that in Canada.

I work with a large Canadian Retailer and as many of you may already be aware they are cutting staff in stores.
So in an effort to get more staff helping to get product out on the shelves they have automated a process that can now be operated by the customer.
Now in theory I agree that getting more staff out there helping customer find items and ensuring products are on the shelves is important.
The truth is that they just cut these people and are not replacing them.
Some stores now have people that do the shopping for online orders and pick up order so new position were created.
One senior manager compared cashiers to trainable monkeys. (Yah I know what year is this again?)
I will be glad when this contract is over I hate working for retailer that don't care about their employees.

Same. Most of the issues they had in the early phase of adoption have been fixed. However, if I'm doing a big shopping I'll wait in the checkout line.
I just love to see my favourite cashier at the local grocery store, irrespective of the number of people ahead of me in the lineups. If she is not around then I use the self checkouts. But as soon as I stand in the lineup and she happens to notice me, I get a very lovely wave and a "Hello, how are you". When she starts cashing out my items, we have a wonderful conversation, and she even packs up my grocery items for me. Love that privilege from her. Will be upset if there are no more cashiers like her around, and only self checkouts everywhere.
I agree with you it's nice to have that human touch once in a while. At the grocery store if I have a number of items that are bakery or fresh produce I don't go to self checkout. Much easier with the cashier who in many cases knows the item code by memory.
I don't do the self check out's. Like others have stated its like im working for them for free. I don't mind waiting in line for a human cashier. I would need an incentive to cashout my own items. Like 5%+ off the total bill if I did it myself. No free labour here
Time is money. You can spend your time waiting in line, then stand there waiting for the cashier to scan your items, or you can scan things yourself and be out the door in a third the time.
Don't get me wrong, I don't care which preference you have. I just don't understand the "free labour" argument. It can't be the time invested, because it's definitely less time to scan yourself. So is it just the physical activity part of it? It's not exactly a strenuous or mentally challenging activity.

Well I guess you really must have gotten upset when you had to start pumping your own gas . How about city forcing people to clean the snow off CITY sidewalks in front of their property . That's CITY property . Why should a citizen be forced to clean CITY property . Is that not free labour .
Great post. They see a see checkout and start crying. ATM's don't forget about those. Online banking? They rather not do the work. They rather hop on the ttc visit a brick and mortar branch line up and see a real human teller rather than work for free.
