Deliberately not scanning or somehow bypassing the system is stealing, despite what any of you shoplifters in this thread may state. You know what you're doing. Please don't try to bullshit it any other way. I only hope you get busted because you're a thief and stealing is never cool and only costs the rest of us money.

I don't know the exact margins for other retailers vs gas stations, but they are both quite thin. Retailers with self-checkouts like Wal-Mart and grocery stores have enormous energy bills and have to take spoilage into account. After all, spoiled fresh food has to be disposed of at some point. Gas stations don't dispose of older gas as it would be a huge safety hazard. They are constantly topping up the storage tank with fresh fuel.

Many retailers allow you to order items online and you can pick it up in store or have it delivered. The same goes for grocery stores like Wal-Mart, Loblaws and Whole Foods where you order online and someone does the shopping for you. If that isn't "full service" enough for you then what is? Or maybe you're expecting that an employee take you through the store.
No,
I’m expecting to go through the store myself select the items that I want go to the cash register and have a cashier check me out.
Not too much to ask.

Unfortunately, it is too much to ask from most retailers these days.

Precisely. They probably steal from their grandmothers and find some lame excuse.

Also there is a reason why their are attendants who offer assistance which the thieves just conveniently ignore

No one is stopping you from doing that. Who is putting a gun to your head to do otherwise?

Those who don't have cashiers just don't shop there. They don't want your thieving business

Most of these stores have both options.
After I’m finished my shopping and get to the checkout I would always want to go to a counter where there is a real cashier.
Sometimes they only have one or two cashiers on and the lineups are huge but the self checkouts are available. That is the only time I use them because I’ve already done my shopping and I don’t want to waste my time.
So when they forced me to work I’m going to get paid.

If you use the self check out you do benefit from time saving. If you get caught thieving you get embarrassed and then the cops take you away,

If the time increases when I use a cashier and decreases if I self scan, the store can decide if it’s worthwhile to deliberately piss off those in longer lines. In my opinion, all should be checked out with the same efficiency.

obviously if the self check outs are longer any intelligent person would go for the human cashier. But there are dumb people out there who would take the longer human cashier rather than the quicker self check out.

Nathan is just delusional. Who is forcing him to work? Is there someone putting a gun to his head? Did he submit a resume? Did someone actually hire him? Who exactly is his employer?

Why not respect those who choose to deal with a human? Is it dumb to have this preference?

Do you also look down on those who prefer automatic transmissions over a stick shift?

what does stick shift have to do with a check out? Now that is dumb. Ok. if you have a lot of time in your hands and are not in a hurry and enjoy waiting then it is not dumb. Are you happy now? And if the cashier is a gorgeous babe then you'd be dumb to use the self checkout.

Having a preference isn't the issue. Nathan is saying that when the line-ups are longer with cashiers, he's going to steal product at the self-checkouts to make up for his having to "work" checking himself out.

If a store expects me to do the work of a cashier myself after I am patronizing their store, I might as well stay home and order online.

For small purchases, I prefer to pay cash. Most self check outs don't take cash. I surely don't want to put a 3 dollar purchase on a credit or debit card.

Cheers

You could make the same argument for having to walk around the store choosing your items. Much simpler online. It's the whole "this is how it's always been done so it's the right way" mindset.

I have a friend who told me he regularly buys apples or bulk items at Loblaws. But he punches in a code for less expensive items so in effect gets a discount. I said you're in effect stealing. He replied, "those fuckers price fixed breads for years until they got caught. Yes, they offered $25 gift cards, but I don't care. Time for me to screw them!"

As for me, I like self checkouts. Considering cashiers rarely bag your groceries for you anyway.
