It's normal in the sense that they saw what you looked like and rather than just nail on shingles, they are trying to dig through the roof to see if they could can catch you when you are naked.
In all seriousness. Depends on how extensive the roofing that needs done. If the plywood on the trusses are good, then they should only be scraping off the old shingles, adding new tar paper and ice guard and nailing new shingles on. Noisy but not shaking. Now if they have had to replace some of the boarding because of some issue, then tearing that up and nailing into the trusses would be felt and heard a bit more.

They are nailing and working into the bones of the house doing this. I doubt they would work harder than they have too. I had mine done last year and had a few house shaker moments too.

Ah, no more than 1 layer. Ever.
Always remove all old roofing membrane (i.e. shingles, or flat membrane (turn and burn)) because if you install the new membrane on top of the old membrane, the new membrane will not sit flat.
The notion of 3 layers of roofing being permitted is absurd.
No shingle manufacturer will warrantee a pound over.
I have heard of that. I think it was a fast way to make a sale by telling the home owner that we will just lay the new stuff on top of the old stuff. Or, if you have to re-roof because you want to sell the house and not give a shit. A good home inspector will know if the roof has been done right.

Putting a new roof over top an old roof is always a bad idea and is false economy. It will cost you far more in the long run.
1. New shingles cannot sit flat no matter what and thus cannot seal down properly making them susceptible to wind damage.
2. Increased dead load on the structure. Not to be discounted.
3. You cannot replace flashing and the boots around plumbing vents properly
4. You cannot replace the ice and water shield (if you're lucky and have Ice and water shield. Some cheap jobs just flip the starter course, or install tar paper.)
5. A pound over will last about half as long as a proper job.
Anyone who tells you you can get away with a pound over is either uninformed, or trying to rip you off.
If the big bangs are sporadic I would think it's because they are dropping the bundles of shingles on the roof.
Funny you should say that... I put a new roof on my parents house maybe 35 years ago.. "Third layer" .. and it lasted almost 30 years, never had a leak [till later when a racoon tore up a section} never curled, no problems..
Till I bought the house, and that damn racoon tore up a section and I replaced the roof... AND PAID TO HAVE 3 LAYERS REMOVED!!!

I agree. Dropping the heavy loads will certainly make the house shake or make you feel like it.
