Even if they did it would take a new large player around 5-10 years to build out the infrastructure and $100 Billion investment roughly to even begin to compete with Rogers/Bell/Telus.

I don't see the market capacity to attract a new player in with the big 3 already in place
This ^

You can forget about major competition coming into Canada's telecommunication industry anytime soon

I had no service for almost 16 hours. Back up now but some are still without service. Rogers says they will be offering credits. Maybe a free month?

Most likely a change that went sideways for one reason or another. Cloudflare noted a flood of BGP updates from the Rogers network immediately prior to the outage.
They must have seriously goosed their BGP tables to take pretty much the whole network offline.
Either way, they should be held to public account for the outage with technical details that can be validated by independent experts.

Such a critical infrastructure cannot be allowed to fail. And the way to prevent failure is to build at least two completely independent systems. Switch to the other if one fails. The fact this is the second major failure in 14 months means the technology team is asleep at the switch and did not learn from the first failure. Heads must roll.

Tried going online at about 5am yesterday and couldn't, noticed that the lights on my modem didn't look normal, tried rebooting it several times, but to no avail. My initial thought was that the modem is kaput and needs to be replaced, really didn't want to go to Rogers store. Then I thought maybe it's a universal problem, I tried texting myself on my cell, but it didn't work, tried calling from my landline to cell and call was not completed, then it dawned on me that the problem was universal. Then Breakfast TV confirmed that it was a Canada wide Rogers outage, BT did not air until 7am (normal start time is at 6am). Whew! no trip to Rogers Store, lol

So I'm thinking of switching over to Virgin.
I pay Rogers for 500 megs down, and here's the speed I'm actually getting

Virgin currently offering 100 megs down for $70 for next 12 months.
After that it goes up to $90. I'm gonna see if I can get a lock-in deal for 3 years
