Four years ago, I saw the Saul Bass 1974 science fiction movie Phase IV at the Royal Cinema. Many of the younger people couldn't understand how such a movie ever got made. I told them this fabricated story, which they bought:
A producer gave Bass $12K, and said 'Make me a movie 85 minutes long about intelligent ants'. The entire purpose of the film was to fill the time between when the park opened and the sun set at a drive-in theatre, (the last scene of Phase IV is a sunset). I'd be in the front seat with two kids younger than myself. The movie was sufficiently interesting to hold their attention. The teenage driver and his girlfriend would be in the back seat, but the driver would have adjusted the rear view mirror, so I could see his 'night moves'. It's OK, he said. Charlene likes being watched".
