First off, my condolences to all the family and friends.
Second, I'll miss Benoit a lot. He was undoubtedly my favorite active wrestler.
Third....yes, if this was a murder-suicide, and Benoit was responsible, it would of course lessen my respect. I believe these things are the result of some sort of mental illness and that had treatment been given, a tragedy could have been averted. But there is never any excuse for taking others with you, especially a young child.
Ultimately, I will always admire Chris for his contributions to wrestling, and I hope he and his family are at peace, no matter what the cause or reason for this senselessness.

As I watched the show tonight I sort of resisted any real compassion for Benoit directly. At the back of my head was always that a murder suicide probably occured.... while I feel bad for someone who obviously had some mental illness, it made me awkward to "Celebrate" his life, given my suspicions. I was hoping that I was wrong, but that does not appear to be the case, sadly.

Pro wrestler Chris Benoit, his wife and 7-year-old son were found slain Monday at their Fayetteville home, authorities said.

Detective Bo Turner told television station WAGA that the case was being investigated as a murder-suicide, but said that could not be confirmed until the evidence was examined by a crime lab.

WAGA reported that investigators believe Benoit killed his wife and son over the weekend, and then himself sometime Monday.

World Wrestling Entertainment said on its Web site that Benoit, 40, his wife, Nancy, and son, who was named Daniel, were found dead, but also had no other details

Benoit, a native of Canada, was a former world heavyweight champion, Intercontinental champion and held several tag-team titles over his career.

"WWE extends its sincerest thoughts and prayers to the Benoit family's relatives and loved ones in this time of tragedy," the federation said in a statement on its Web site.

Benoit was scheduled to perform at the "Vengeance" pay-per-view event Sunday night in Houston, but was replaced at the last minute because of what announcer Jim Ross called "personal reasons."

Benoit maintained a home in metro Atlanta from the time he wrestled for the defunct World Championship Wrestling.

The WWE canceled its live "Monday Night RAW" card in Corpus Christi, Texas, and USA Network aired a three-hour tribute to Benoit in place of the scheduled wrestling telecast.

Benoit's wife managed several wrestlers and went by the stage name, "Woman," The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on its Web site.

They met when her then-husband drew up a script that had them involved in a relationship as part of an ongoing storyline on World Championship Wrestling, the newspaper said.

Benoit has two other children from a prior relationship.

The federal-style house is in a secluded neighborhood set back about 60 yards off a gravel road, surrounded by stacked stone wall and double-iron gate.

Monday night, the house was dark except for a few outside lights. There was a police car in front, and two uniformed officers.

Benoit's death part of a double murder-suicide
Written: June 25, 2007

According to lead investigator Lt. Tommy Pope, of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department, in Fayetteville, Ga., the deaths of WWE Superstar Chris Benoit, wife Nancy and son Daniel were the result of a double murder-suicide, WWE.com has learned.

Benoit failed to appear both at Saturday’s live event in Beaumont, Tx., and WWE’s Vengeance: Night of Champions in Houston Sunday night, after informing WWE of a family emergency. Several curious text messages sent by Benoit early Sunday morning prompted concerned friends to alert Richard Hering, VP of Government Relations for WWE, Inc. Hering, in turn, spoke with Fayette County sheriffs Monday, and requested that they respond to the Benoit residence to check on him and his family.

Authorities representing the Sheriff’s Department initially had a difficult time entering Benoit’s new Fayetteville home Monday afternoon, which had been guarded by two large German Shepherds roaming freely around the property. Once authorities entered the residence, they quickly located the bodies of Benoit, Nancy and Daniel. WWE was notified of the discovery at approximately 4 p.m.

At 10 p.m. Monday night, Lt. Pope held a press conference in conjunction with Scott Ballard, the district attorney for Fayette County. The press conference officially ruled authorities’ findings as a double murder-suicide from within the home.

WAGA, a FOX-owned and operated television station in Atlanta, reported that investigators believe Benoit killed his wife and 7-year-old son over the weekend, then himself on Monday.

The three bodies have been received by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s crime lab, in Decatur, Ga., where autopsies will be performed Tuesday morning. Toxicology reports will not become available for at least two weeks.

WWE.com has further information relating to both the investigation and the cause of death, but the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department has requested that WWE.com not release any additional details at this time.

Wow what sad news to wake up to this morning. Just this weekend I picked up the Royal Rumble Anthology and watched the 2002 RR where Benoit goes end to end starting at #1 and beating the Big Show to win the 30 man battle royal. He had always been one of my favourite wrestlers since his stampede days, then wcw, loved him as a horseman, loved his best of 7 with booker T, happy to see him go to the wwe and eventually win the heavyweight title. Never got a chance to see his ecw days.

I always felt he was never used to his full potential.

It's a sad day for wrestling. I hope it wasn't a murder suicide.

Benoit's wcw phrase..."Silent but Violent" is pretty chilling now.

Chris was a great wrestler...with enormous intensity..i always thought he looked like he had a monsterous temper.

i imagine the death of his best friend Eddie Gurerro last year must have really affected him..as well as his volitile relationship with his wife.

i remember looking up to these guys growing up..and would think what a great life they have...fame must take it's toll on these guys...because turn out so F*CKED UP!

All my sympathy is with Nancy Sullivan (aka: "Woman", aka "Robin"). She also had a younger sister who was, according to Nancy, more beautiful than her. In case you guys and gals didn't know, Nancy communicated with loads of fans when she was hanging with Ric Flair on the Internet in 1996 and let us all know her real personal feelings. She was an absolute doll back in 1996. She ended all that when she hooked up with Benoit, but according to both of them, in 1996, they were REALLY happy together and went their way to create a family. I guess we need a CEO like Eric Bischoff in charge of a wrestling organization like in 1996 in which times were good for the performers.

So I'm shocked like losing a friend. A tragedy. Would like to know more details as they come in.

Yes, CNN sucks. The most untrusted name in news. Never mentioned a word of it at any time, or on their website. As if they manipulate public opinion by keeping them from knowing. Not as if CNN could pop a van down there right in Hot-lanta, their main headquarters. They didn't, which means they are trash. Good thing for competition and thank you Net. I wouldn't have known about this had it not been for TERB and pressuring the media on the story.

WWE is sad to report that Chris Benoit and his family have been found dead in their home. Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Tonight's Raw will be a tribute to Chris and his family.

Can anyone say ROID RAGE?? This is getting sad the way these guys all die so young

Dude - deep breath. It's been on CNN's main website for a while, as well as the SI/CNN site.

Dude RTFF. When the news broke, CNN was tight lipped. Fox ran the story first, then MSNBC. CNN was still out in the darkness. And typical because when Turner sold CNN and WCW, so south did the journalism go too. Read this thread as it developed. CNN was last and with their bullshit "Most Trusted Name in News" and "Be the First to Know", they were **dead** last (to say it mildly), yet the closest to the location.

What sort of great family man would murder his family, a seven year kid dead, all the respect I had for him is gone. If he needed help there is lots of places to get it. If his fellow wrestlers new nothing about what was going with him then they didn't know him either. rip chris

This comment is full of it. They had to know that there was a possibility of murder suicide - in fact before the broadcast came out local Atlanta media where quoting police sources that it was murder suicide.

... however the WWE decided to run a tribute for what is now a suspected murderer - most likely because of past ratings numbers when other respected wrestlers past. They should have waited a weekso that they had all the information on this tragedy. I wonder how the wife's family feels about the loss of a daughter and grandson to murder when the suspect is honored on national TV.

This is a very sad tragedy and McMahon/WWE took full advantage to make a buck. I truly hope they get what should come their way on this.

I'm completely disgusted.

Wow............. Look McMahon does a lot of questionable things, but lets be fair here. Could this have been an attempt to make money? Yes. Do I think so? No. Wrestlers and the other guys with them on the road are family to each other. Benoit was a well liked guy and was loved by most that knew him.

Now ask yourself a question, if you heard that someone very beloved in your family died would you not rush to honour them? I think you would, even more so if the person in question was beloved by most. Should they have waited? Yeah, probably, but I won't fault them for honouring one of there own so soon. There is the potential that he committed a murder suicide, but to come up with a 3 hour tribute the same day isn't easy, they probably made the decision before they had all the facts and I don't think anyone at WWE would have thought for even a second that Benoit could have done something like that.

WWE is said to have further information on the situation. They have been asked by police not to disclose it though. I find it disturbing that every news article shows a picture of Chris. Not a single one has shown a picture or honoured Nancy or the Child in any way shape of form.
