Temperance Street actually. Four floors of the best Hardware store in Toronto, if not the country. Pascals in Montreal was maybe a runner-up, but either way. nothing like them today. Where do you go now, for 1¼" oval-head screws? Not round, not flat, not pan, but oval head, and in stock, that any staff you asked could tell you where.

Anyone ever got the "Strap" in elementary school for misbehaving???? lol

I came close, never got it.
I got the "slugs" in grade 2, 7 years old. They were administered by the principal, Mr. Clubine, 3 on each palm with a gold gilded leather strap. I cried.

There was a rule of no snowballs at the school. At recess one day, we drew a target on a blank brick wall, no windows and threw snowballs at the target. Did not throw at any kids whatsoever. A teacher saw us and sent us to the office. A grave injustice.

How about if your were a kid going to Canada's Wonderland in the 80's and hearing this song played over and over on the park speakers:

Speaking of Wonderland, I remember as a kid driving up there, it felt like this crazy long drive. I mean it was all farms and the 400 wasn't nearly what it is now. I remember going over a hill and seeing the mountain saying "I can see the Mountain!". It felt like a 2 hour drive up north.

Omfg lol...moving from oz to western New York meant discovering that joy of just airing your arm out in winter - snowballs everywhere....school busses, other kids, cars, the excitement racing through your body when someone announces "it's good packing!!!!" LOL...I remember writing letters back to friends in oz who wondered how people survive in the dead cold of winter that this snow thing was awesome...lol...every so often an iceball or "rock inside of snowball" incident or controversy would arise...or a driver would get out of their car and yell or chase you lol...

In grade 6, my teacher actually brought in a plywood form that we used to build these snow walls which you use for cover during a snowball fight. In junior high we used to have massive snowball fights in grades 7, and 8. There was one time where it got a little out of hand, and the Vice Principal (who struck fear in most) wandered in to break it up. Just as he was raising his hands to shout - POW - right in his face. I swear I don't know who threw it... The other snowball thing I remember is building an arsenal of snowballs and waiting from a hiding spot where the street was slightly below then waiting for a TTC Bus to drive past and pelting it. Not at people, just the bus itself. One time the bus stopped and a large driver tried to chase us down. Again, everybody scattered. LOL! One other winter memory was "bumper hitching" after a fresh snowfall - this would be on your own street and back when the streets were not plowed as quickly as they are these days. Anyway, bumper hitching was running behind a car, grabbing the bumper and going for a ride as your boots skidded along the snow. The key was to make sure there were no following cars and knowing when to let go because some drivers could detect what you were doing and sped up!

Did anybody get to go on a school field trip to see the King Tut exhibit at the AGO in 1979? http://artmatters.ca/wp/category/tut/memories-of-king-tut-1979/
There was only enough room for two classes in my school in my grade and I missed out. It’s one of those childhood regrets that sort of stayed with me. I loved all things Egypt and museums and my rinky dink school wasn’t able to get the whole grade there.

Someday I’ll see the mask and his stuff. Maybe when Egypt settles down, politically, in a few more years.

When I was growing up in the 60’s, my dad was a devoted CFRB listener, in the car and at home. So it was a steady diet of Gordon Sinclair, Betty Kennedy, Jack Dennett, Jocko Thomas (from police HEADQUARTERS), Bill Stephenson on sports and Ray Sonin’s “Calling All Britons”. I remember a lot of commercial jingles that played continuously on the station, most memorably for Milne’s fuel oil. “ You can depend on the friendly men at Milne’s, no matter when trust the friendly men at Milne’s”.

And the Hyland right beside it. And Bregmans across the street.

And what was the name of that big theater on Yonge west side, just south of Bloor. I saw Woodstock there.
The "Uptown", during demolition about 12 years ago, the remaining south wall fell onto a building next to it and killed a young boy
