Replacing License Plates?

Why would MTO go to the expense of ordering, manufacturing, shipping and issuing a custom-order license plate at no cost, when there is a box full of ready-made and perfectly fine plates on the floor right behind the girl, that you could walk away with that very day? If for some reason you want the exact number you had before, then it is a matter of personal vanity and that number is available to you at a cost. Seems rational to me.

In UK...you get the number, which can be cut by sign shops...you can continue using the same number as long as you wish, just have the number added to your next are docs. But I guess it would made too much sense in Ontario...so we dont do it, as our government loves every penny they could get hold off. It would make good economic sense if private businesses could cut the plates...buyer/seller market...just my 0.02 as i am getting sicker and sicker with our government every passing day!!!!
That how it works for boats

Because as already pointed out, other places in North America say pay us between $5 and $10 per plate and we will issue you a replacement plate. What, is the Ontario MTO so much futher behind the curve that they are incapable of doing the same?

In other provinces/states, do they actually replace your plates if they're lost or stolen (i.e. issue the same plate number which means a new replacement set is made) or just simply grab the next set of un-issued plates and give those to you?
Yes they replace them.

If you go in and fill out the form saying that you "lost" (they look like crap, some University student thought it was a funny plate and it is now on their dorm room wall, it fell off my car when I hit the pothole) and pay the fee, you can get a replacement of that same registration number.

If I lost my front plate, I would have a new one made, rather than go through the annoyance of getting a new number. I don't think anyone would ever catch you. If you are the legal owner of that number, the punishment could not be too severe, I would expect.

I don't know what is more stupid, Ontario rules or the emotional attachment to the old combination of letters and digits

Back in the day the plates were associated to the car and not the driver so when you sold your car you'd sell it with the plates that were registered to it.... val-tags kind of saw an end to that...

Anybody know if its legal to make your own licence plates? Simply get a piece of white plastic and stick some vinyl letters on it??
I meant, in the situation of the poster -- where he wants to replace his existing legal plate. Obviously, it's not legal to make them up from scratch -- duh!!

Forcing one to get a new number means you have to replace documentation, memorize a new number, update toll road databases, etc. A real pain.

I just left the old damaged plate on the car as I recall - not pretty, but if the Ontario government would rather have ugly looking plates driving around then put in a bit of effort themselves, well so be it.
You can drive around with ugly, rusted plates as long as the numbers/letters are visible, if not the police can fine you, so in a way, yes they will force you to get new plates if they're not legible from a certain distance by the police.

Unfortunately, this is true. Stupid, but true.

My driver went through a similar situation a while ago. He lost his front license plate (it fell off while he was driving and he didn't realize it until he got home) but still had his rear one (the more important one with the validation sticker on it). He called the MTO and asked for a replacement but was told he'd have to call the police and report his front plate as lost, and then get a new set of plates with a new number on them.

It's really stupid the way the Ministry of Transportation handles license plates on cars. Apparently each plate number will only ever get made once and they simply won't issue replacements. I can see where in the case of a lost front plate they'd be worried about someone finding it and trying to use it, causing confusion, but in your friend's case, they still have both original plates, so why not just swap them? It wouldn't be that hard for someone to call the MTO and arrange for a new set of plates to replace their old ones, and then when the new plates are ready to take their old, worn-out plates in and exchange them for the new ones with the same number - the Ministry could then destroy the old plates. But that would require actual work on their part. Easier to just make us do the work and go through the inconvenience of changing our licensing.

Typical government being stupid ...
Funny, it makes total sense to me.

Plates are made on a production line, in a certain series, issued to certain offices - all of which would be documented and recorded. They can't merely stop the presses to make a "replacement plate"

If one is so attached to a plate - then get a vanity plate made.

Simple.

From the HTA:

Violations as to number plates

12. (1) Every person who,

(a) defaces or alters any number plate, evidence of validation or permit;

(b) uses or permits the use of a defaced or altered number plate, evidence of validation or permit;

(c) without the authority of the permit holder, removes a number plate from a motor vehicle or trailer;

(d) uses or permits the use of a number plate upon a vehicle other than a number plate authorized for use on that vehicle;

(e) uses or permits the use of evidence of validation upon a number plate displayed on a motor vehicle other than evidence of validation furnished by the Ministry in respect of that motor vehicle; or

(f) uses or permits the use of a number plate or evidence of validation other than in accordance with this Act and the regulations,

is guilty of an offence and on conviction is liable to a fine of not less than $100 and not more than $1,000 or to imprisonment for not more than thirty days, or to both, and in addition the person’s licence or permit may be suspended for not more than six months. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 12 (1).

Property of the Crown

(2) Every number plate is the property of the Crown and shall be returned to the Ministry when required by the Ministry. 1999, c. 12, Sched. R, s. 5 (1).

You aren't the legal owner, the Crown is.... you're just renting. :) So I would imagine that making a new plate - not sure how cost effective it would be to find someone who could stamp out a plate and paint it with the right type of reflective paint - would not be legit.

In the UK plates belong to cars, not people. But you're right, you can get new ones made if say you wanted one without the EU flag on it.

I drove for 4 years without a front plate until I was finally pulled over for not having a front plate. Had to turn in the old rear plate and get a new set. But I made the girl go through the pile until she came to a number I liked!

They should go back to having inmates make license plates.

Why not, is Ontario that much behind the rest of North America?

It usually takes about a month since it is done as they have the time.

If there's any sort of production in the system, they should be able to press out enough plates for a months supply in less that a day. more like a few hours I would imagine. With computers it should be very easy to run off vanity plates without huge setups .I bet its just the bureaucracy that's getting in the way of it all

At one time, it was believed that prisoners made the plates in the penitentiaries. Is that true?

Who cares what your plate # is? Way back before the sticker system we have now, you got a new plate every year. They were different numbers too. One year they were letter, letter, letter, number, number, number and the next year they were number, number, number, letter, letter, letter. They also alternated white on blue and blue on white. Even before that they were black and yellow.
