Ontario's Millbrook correctional facility was making plates a few years ago when I shot there.

Boy does Ontario march to a different drummer or what. No wonder there are no, low number folks in Ontario.
Aardwark, what do you think would happen in your jurisdiction if people were slapped with 8% tax and told that it's for their benefit?

I can tell you what happened in Ontario: we sucked it up and swallowed like a good bitch does.

Unfortunately, this is true. Stupid, but true.

My driver went through a similar situation a while ago. He lost his front license plate (it fell off while he was driving and he didn't realize it until he got home) but still had his rear one (the more important one with the validation sticker on it). He called the MTO and asked for a replacement but was told he'd have to call the police and report his front plate as lost, and then get a new set of plates with a new number on them.

It's really stupid the way the Ministry of Transportation handles license plates on cars. Apparently each plate number will only ever get made once and they simply won't issue replacements. I can see where in the case of a lost front plate they'd be worried about someone finding it and trying to use it, causing confusion, but in your friend's case, they still have both original plates, so why not just swap them? It wouldn't be that hard for someone to call the MTO and arrange for a new set of plates to replace their old ones, and then when the new plates are ready to take their old, worn-out plates in and exchange them for the new ones with the same number - the Ministry could then destroy the old plates. But that would require actual work on their part. Easier to just make us do the work and go through the inconvenience of changing our licensing.

Typical government being stupid ...
He could always get a vanity plate saying "SP Driver." :))

I have never understood the attachment to license plate numbers. Vanity plates are too memorable. Not goo unless you are a rock star.

Low number plates are better, and better yet in most places they are considered regular old plates in terms of $.

I know that low numbered plates are a fad in some countries on the Continent where BTW you are assigned a number and have the plate made at a nearby private workshop and then stamped by an official. If yiu lose the plate, you just have anoither one made.

If you don't go the vanity plate route, it seems to me it is good to have as anonymous a plate as possible, especially when hobbying.

As far as I know, in North America there is no $ value to a low numbered plate. Anyway, to each his own!

speaking of anonymous, I've seen plates like 1771711 or O0OO0O0 that clearly attempted to be impossible to remember. I understand that this is against the law though, so those may be pulled by the Ministry after the first complaint.

True. However in many places there is a certain social value to them.

Also most people really don't pay all that much attention to numbers. Words or phrases are far easier to remember.

Regular plates are made on an assembly line in numeric/alphabetic sequence. This is much less expensive than striking a specific sequence on request.

As a result, if you want to have a specific plate number/letter combination, this has to be custom made and, therefore, it is a vanity plate (even if it does not have a cute name).

I see no problem with you (or anyone else) getting charged to have a custom plate made since it disrupts the assembly line and costs more to produce.

There's no real risk that the number would get reused unless someone else orders it as a vanity plate in the brief time between the cancellation and your order going in.

But when the Conservatives brought it in it was only 3%. Unable to manage with that pittance they then raised it.

A bit like a hand slipping under a skirt.
