That 72 summit team would have looked a lot different if he was on it.
What was the deal for the Summit Series? Did the NHL forbid its players from playing alongside WHA players?

Knowing what little I know of NHL salaries in the early 70s, his Winnipeg salary was likely a big jump.

You had to be part of the NHLPA...if you were a WHA player you weren't.

Bobby Hull quote: in which he said the Black population was growing too fast in America, and that :“Hitler, for example, had some good ideas. He just went a little bit too far.”

This and he beat his wife bloody and dangled her over a balcony.

Pretty much confirms he was a shitty human.

In the 1974 WHA-Russia series Hull got a hat trick in one period, he was the only Canadian to have Tretiak's number, he could not handle Hull's shot
I wouldn't think the WHA was a match for the Soviets, but it looks like they put up a fight.

This was an interesting article. I always thought a larger surface favored skilled hockey players.

This quote from the article put it into perspective. "The majority of the games in the tournament were played like soccer on ice."

I am one of the non-traditionalist soccer fans who thinks the soccer pitch is too long and possibly too wide. Soccer could use more scoring sequences with superior offensive numbers (vs. number of defensive players) attacking goal.
I remember an interview with a group of Russian players back in the 90's and they were asked what it was like to play on the smaller ice surface. The answer was it made the game faster and you had to be more creative.

I remember watching some of the games as a kid, however the feeling was that it was "not the NHL players", so expectations were they would get smoked.

There are a few good reads out there about the series and it did introduce a couple of things:

* The WHA promised that the broadcasts would be cutting edge, deploying eight cameras, including handheld and slow-motion cameras. The Canadian games would also feature the GameRecorder, a statistical computer that would track Team Canada events such as shots, face off wins and pass completion percentage. Allegedly the first use of a statistical computer in professional sports.
* The players actually trained before the series, even playing some exhibition games against current WHA clubs (could not find any videos of those games).
* Team Canada '74 had a better record at home than the '72 club had (1-1-2 vs. 1-2-1).
* From a re-match perspective, The Red Army had 17 out of 24 players from the '72 series whereas Canada only had 4.

As noted by WyattEarp, they actually played well (all things considering).

One final note, the '74 series introduced the Russian empire to the porn 'stache.

I'm not defending Hull, but just to give a balanced view, he denied making those comments about Hitler.

Of course he denied the comments. His family, friends/mates and the hockey establishment told him how stupid and damaging it was.

Can't put the toothpaste back in the tube once it's out.
