I thought tonight's show was beyond poor. They did a songs of the new milennium night last year too, and I remember thinking that show was weak too. I don't know what it is. Is it just too broad a net?
Okay, the rundown:
Lisa - I have to admit, I've been a little puzzled why this girl seems so unpopular. She is younger and thinner than Mandisa, and far less annoying than Paris, so why is she the odd sista out? After this week's outing, I know why--she simply isn't very good.
I have to admit, I like Kelly Clarkson. I liked her when she was on AI 1, and I like her now. When "Because of You" came out, I wasn't too excited. I thought it was a fairly dull song, and not as good as "Since You've Been Gone", for example. After hearing Lisa butcher that song tonight, I have renewed respect for Kelly's talent. Kelly makes that song seem effortless, and it became obvious very quickly that Lisa just doesn't have that kind of power. Now, granted, Kelly's a pro and Lisa's a kid, but Simon summed it up when he said she picked a song that was too big for her.
Kellie and Bucky - I am lumping them together because I have no ear for country music and will give them the benefit of the doubt in believing they both did passable jobs. Kellie is popular, so she isn't going anywhere, but Bucky needed a breakout performance.
Ace - A bit less gay this week, and I thought he did an acceptable job on that Train song. Just not real exciting.
Mandisa - She just sounded a little off to me tonight, and while I know she can't wear a muumuu every week, the sight of her in those pants was unnerving. I had to look away. I don't think she goes anywhere just yet.
Chris - I like Chris, but for crying out loud, Creed? I thought Simon's comments were spot on. Indulgent, and quite frankly, it's getting a little repetitive and boring even. Over the past two weeks, Chris has found a loophole in the weekly themes, first with the Chili Peppers' version of "Higher Ground" and next with Live's version of "I Walk the Line", so he really hasn't had to change his style very much. Even though I think Chris has a lot of talent, one of the things I like about this competition is watching vocalists attack different styles. It is a singing competition after all. I like Chris, but unless he shows he can do something else, I think Katharine should win.
Katharine - Maybe I'm tonedeaf, but I thought she was sharp for most of the song. I think she did a decent job, but like with Lisa and Kelly Clarkson, I thought she paled in comparison to Christina. I thought her outfit was unflattering too. Doesn't matter, she stays.
Taylor - I appreciated the fact that he kept his histrionics under control this week, but I couldn't help be a little bored. He stays.
Paris - LOL. While I appreciate the fact that she tried the rumpshaker move, I felt the same way as I did the previous week. She is a girl trying to act like a woman. Again, the vocals were fine, but I didn't buy the performance. She stays, but I think she is losing capital.
Elliott - Yep, that damn 'One Tree Hill' song again. I thought it was a pretty good effort, a little more personality being shown. This helps his cause.
I think it's pretty clear Lisa goes, although sometimes when Simon is mean to someone, they get a lot of sympathy votes. Nah, Lisa goes.
