Probably one of the most competitive players of any team sport out there.

Maybe one of the most stubborn as well.

I hated those big red machine teams he was on but damn they were good. Took my Yankees out in 4 in 76...Grrr..

Asshole, regardless of how good he was.
I really like Charlie Hustle. I never liked his gambling demons but loved him on the field and supported his HOF bid.

That said, I am also a bit out of touch. So, what makes him an asshole?

He just didn't seem to be a good person. Plus his refusal to be honest after so many years after the fact.
The utterings of an asshole.

Thanks, I did not get asshole from that interview.

If it was me, I would have clocked Jim Gray for (though doing what he was hired to do) being an asshole.

Where was Pete Rose an asshole?

For continuing to lie on live TV when the whole world knew he was guilty and then trying to put the offensive on Jim Gray for simply doing his job of being an investigative reporter. Pete, man up.

Didn't care for his personality, but liked to watch him play baseball. Since he passed away I'll try to remember something positive. In 1978 he had a hitting streak that reached a historic level. This was before the era of computers, internet, and instantaneous communication. I recall regularly tuning into tv and radio to get an update on his progress. The longer the streak went the more people got into it, and it became a big news item. Finally, after hitting safely in 44 straight games the streak was over. To this day it is the third longest hitting streak in MLB history, and the closest someone has come is a 39 game hitting streak(Paul Molitor).

Paul Giamatti si not a fan of Pete Rose.

He didn't know when to let up. He broke Ray Fosse's leg during the All Star game and started numerous dugout clearing brawls. Like Ty Cobb before him, he ended up alienating his own family. His sons couldn't live up to his standards.

Pete Rose was arguably the greatest hitter until Ichiro came in. But, he was a degenerate gambler who bet on games he was managing. He deserved to be banned, and I doubt the HOF will change its mind on him. I mean, Barry Bonds isn't in the hall, and he didn't really do anything wrong per se....while other juicers got in....Now, part of that is because Bonds is a Grade-A asshole. But, his he was not the only person cheating with PEDs.

Pete Rose was one of the greatest to ever play, in any professional sport. They treated him like he was a murderer. OK so he gambled and bet on games he was involved in. Its no different today in sports Vegas determines outcome in many instances. For example this past weekend everyone and their mother was betting the 3-0 Steelers against the Colts who looked horrible to start the season. I saw that and said nope I'm not betting this one this has Vegas shenanigans written all over it. And sure enough the Steelers lost by 3.

Just heard on the radio. The disk jockey was saying that he didn't bet against himself or his team. He bet on himself to win. Which rather than cheating, seems more like good sportsmanship.no? Not like he was throwing the games. More like the opposite.

I can accept that.

But the problem is that he is leaving himself open to being manipulated by gamblers. Depending on whatever the circumstances may be, at some point they could have something on him and then squeeze him to do their bidding. There are a lot of mobsters involved in bookmaking.

I remember that…it was a celebration of the game’s great players, it wasn’t time for an “investigative reporter”, Jim Gray was out of line.

If you bet on yourself every game okay...But suppose you're resting a few relievers for a game you're intending to bet on? Stacking the deck in your favour...It's a slippery slope...
