Maybe in Heaven or Hell... wherever he ends up... he will get into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Probably one of the most competitive players of any team sport out there.
Maybe one of the most stubborn as well.
I hated those big red machine teams he was on but damn they were good. Took my Yankees out in 4 in 76...Grrr..

I really like Charlie Hustle. I never liked his gambling demons but loved him on the field and supported his HOF bid.
That said, I am also a bit out of touch. So, what makes him an asshole?

He just didn't seem to be a good person. Plus his refusal to be honest after so many years after the fact.

If it was me, I would have clocked Jim Gray for (though doing what he was hired to do) being an asshole.

For continuing to lie on live TV when the whole world knew he was guilty and then trying to put the offensive on Jim Gray for simply doing his job of being an investigative reporter. Pete, man up.
Didn't care for his personality, but liked to watch him play baseball. Since he passed away I'll try to remember something positive. In 1978 he had a hitting streak that reached a historic level. This was before the era of computers, internet, and instantaneous communication. I recall regularly tuning into tv and radio to get an update on his progress. The longer the streak went the more people got into it, and it became a big news item. Finally, after hitting safely in 44 straight games the streak was over. To this day it is the third longest hitting streak in MLB history, and the closest someone has come is a 39 game hitting streak(Paul Molitor).
