mouse, how does it feel to contradict yourself in one sentence?
I don't know tboy. I guess you didn't understand what I said. There are 3 different taxes on gas, 2 are volume based, 1 is price based. (as I discovered yesterday from my Petro Canada receipt).

mouse:

I understand what you said perfectly,
You were disputing the post that said that the higher the price of gas goes, the more revenue the government collects.

You said that the taxes are per litre not per price then you turned around and said the GST IS in fact based on price.

So basically you were saying that you agree with the post that said the higher the price of gas, the more revenue the government takes in.

I can only fathom why any idiot would post that prices were X when in fact they aren't.

Just goes to show you that humanity is doomed.....doomed I say....

Fair enough... my point is that the government doesn't profit as much from higher prices as most people think.

I couldn't find stats for 2005 but in 2003 in canada, there were
38,421,608,000 litres of gasoline sold. Of course we most likely sold more this year but we can use that as an example.

(btw, that is BILLIONS)

If the price of a litre was 99 cents, the government took in 7 cents per litre or $2,689,512,560.00

If the price is 1.34 per litre:

$3,603,946,830.4

The difference is (drumroll please)

$914,434,270.40

914 million dollars is a friggin significant amount there people

because of the shear volume of gas purchased any increase or decrease is significant.....

Tax the people. Sounds right. Reports I have seen state that transportation is a net expense for the government, ie. taxes on gas do not pay for the expenses of maintaining and improving the transportation infrastructure.

Beyond that, if the gas companys see that we are willing to pay $1.10 per litre, the 10 cents reduction from taxes will last about 4 hours before the price is miraculously at $1.10 again.

Improving our transportation infrastructure? I'd like to see how....oh, maybe it is like that clusterfuck at the DVP and 401....They've been improving that non-stop since 1985.....

To put it bluntly, the government wastes about 30% of every dollar it collects. Get rid of that waste and you'd solve a LOT of problems....

I know I am going to get a lot of flakes on this thread.

Wake up fellows Canadians and stop crying.

For years we have been used to relatively inexpensive gas in Canada, as compared to the rest of the world (with the exception of the U.S. and Saudi Arabia). This has encouraged a non care attitude and resulted in an excess in consumption, driving unnecessary gas guzzling large vehicles, SUVs and minivans, the majority of them with one person aboard. Most people do not need them, they are just a status symbol. They only contribute to excessive gas usage and resulting pollution, climatic changes (of which we start to see the dramatic effects with the increase in numbers and ferocity of hurricanes). Before anyone jumps on me, yes, I do drive a car, but not a monster, and make use of the bicycle or walk as often as I can.

People need to reconsider their driving habits.
Canada may have signed the Kyoto accord, which the U.S have not, but we still are last on the list of the participating countries regarding the reduction in pollution. Canada had pledged a 5% reduction by 2005: the actual results indicate an increase of 20%. We are still the worst polluters in the world.

Increase in gas price will provide the incentive needed in achieving these goals. As far as the oil companies are concerned, sure they are profiting, that's why companies are in business for, but look on the positive side, they provide employment for an enormous amount of peoples.

We are masters of our destiny. More pollution = climatic changes = Katrina and likes = higher cost in energy.

Time to stop and reverse that pattern.

Correction to"Wake up ........

I incorrectly stated that Canada's goal was to reduce pollution by 5% by 2005. It should have read 2012. However, as of 2005, not only have we failed to reduce any amount of greenhouse gas emission, but we continue to increase it, latest tests showing a 20% increase in harmful emission over the 1990 level.
