I ask this of clients. It engages conversation. Like while getting dressed at the end of the session. Why sit in silence when you can get to know someone quickly and personally.

I know it’s just a conversation starter but I always hated the question. My job doesn’t define me.
I imagine it’s much worse for those who are hiding their occupation - like sexworkers or drug dealers. Or if you’re unemployed or on disability.
It’s good to come up with a fake job to respond with or go on a counterattack to deflect the subject.

How much respect do you have for a vacuum cleaner ? Respect has no relationship to your daily interaction with people, actions or objects - it's just personal preferences.

You don't want to live your life for other people's values, prejudices, etc. A lot of them are assholes and know it. They just crave at any reason - real or imagined - that would put their miserable life above someone else.

I'm not impressed by titles, where you work or how much you make. I grade you by your character. As for other's peoples impression of me - I'd rather be underestimated instead of overestimated.

As far as some of the customers that show zero respect - it's not uncommon to resent what you can't have.
