At long last, after months upon years of pushing back their opening date and freaking out early adopters who'd been suspecting they may never get to use their fancy gift certificates, the now-infamously delayed Thermëa Spa Village in Whitby is open for business.

I'm serious! Groupe Nordik's Thermëa spa village in Whitby is finally, actually ready to welcome wellness-seekers into Ontario's brand new, high-tech, Scandinavian-inspired temple of hot and cold.

"The spa village boasts an internationally inspired thermotherapy experience that was specifically created for our Canadian environment," announced the spa's operators on Wednesday.

Groupe Nordik, which bills itself as "the creators of North America's largest spa and pioneers in the Canadian wellness industry," says that this new spa in Whitby is the company's third ever, and its first foray into the Ontario market.

"With over a decade in the making, this best-in-class spa village represents the largest spa investment ever made in Canada," notes the firm.

"As the latest addition to Durham's revitalization, the facility will rank as not only the largest spa village of its kind in Ontario, but also as a major tourist destination in the Greater Toronto Area, easily accessible via highways 401, 407 and Go Transit."

Cool, cool... but why?

Photos sent along by the Groupe Nordik team of the actual built resort (as opposed to the renderings we've been seeing since Thermëa Whitby was first announced all the way back in 2020) illustrate just how cool this place will be.

First off, it features something called the Loggä — an "iconic log cabin designed sauna" with its own "one-of-a-kind amphitheatre interior design" that just so happens to be the largest sauna in Canada with capacity for more than 90 people at a time.
"The spa village incorporates innovative technology created in collaboration with an international team of experts, such as Fläm, a proprietary duo-energy driven sauna, as well as Kello, a sauna with a unique auto-infusion technology," notes Groupe Nordik.

A statement water tower provides all the chilly tonic for cold plunge experiences, which are said to improve everything from immune systems to symptoms of depression.

In total (on top of the multiple saunas,) the village has two steam rooms, seven baths and the largest saltwater floatation pool in North America (they call it Källa.)

Is it going to be run in true European style and give the patrons the option of enjoying the experience naked?

McLaren said the company is giving all customers who visited the pool in the specific time frame a credit of $58.

Customer complaints about infections prompt spa east of Toronto to close its pools

A new spa in Whitby, Ont. has closed all of its pools after bacteria was detected in its underground saltwater pool and following reports by customers of skin rashes, flu symptoms, ear infections and inflamed lymph nodes.

In a news release on Thursday, Thermëa Spa Village confirmed the Durham Region Health Department found pseudomonas and staphylococcus (staph) bacteria in its Källa pool. The department notified the spa, located east of Toronto, of the finding on Oct. 14, just eight days after it opened.

Ted Snieg, an Oshawa resident who went to the spa on Oct. 8 because he needed a "getaway," said he has been to the hospital twice after his visit there.

"I was very sick. I was unable to get out of my bed for two full days. I could not eat for four full days," he said.

Snieg said he started feeling unwell within 24 hours of his visit. Within days, he was diagnosed with cellulitis, an ear infection and a nipple infection. He is now on antibiotics.

The company said it immediately closed the underground pool and hired a team of experts to investigate. On Thursday, it said it closed all of its pools, even though all the other ones were safe, and it is doing an audit of all ot its equipment.

'We aren't impressed'

Snieg and several other patrons, however, have taken to Facebook to describe their infections and to complain that the spa should have notified them as soon as it knew there was a problem.

The company notified them on Oct. 19 in a letter from its CEO.

Snieg said he wants to know why the the spa knew about the problem on Oct.14 but did not alert the public until days later. He said the company has ignored his emails and is not answering the phone. He said the company has not apologized.

"I have a Facebook group with over 25 people who have gotten sick and we aren't impressed with the communication from the spa, the transparency until it was too late," he said.

Snieg wrote on Facebook on Oct. 17: "All my Lymph nodes are inflamed, they're so big and they severely hurt. I can't sleep because I'm constantly itchy. My ears I can't even touch as they hurt so bad with infection."

Spa owner promises equipment audits

Martin Paquette, owner and CEO of Thermëa Spa Village, said in the release that the spa was"devastated" to learn that some customers are suffering from symptoms of staph infections. He said the pool was closed as soon as the company learned of the "suspicious" result.

"To ensure the quality of our water, we will complete a full internal and external audit of every single piece of equipment until they are all functioning to their full potential," Paquette said.

"As for now, I have instructed my team to close access to all the pools on the site until I have the absolute confidence that our water calibration systems work perfectly for the entire site."

Sofie Dialynas-Vatsis, who visited the spa on Oct. 8, said the company's response is not good enough. She said it was beautiful and the service was amazing. But the next day, she said she felt sick.

"I ended up going to the doctors because I couldn't take it anymore," she said.

"It was bad; my eyes were burning, my teeth were hurting, my chest was horrible, it felt like an elephant was sitting on me and I got antibiotics. I found out I was very sick, he said I had a serious infection," she said.

Amanda McLaren, marketing manager for the spa, said the company believes fewer than one per cent of visitors to the pool in the specific time were affected.

"Until we knew the exact nature of the timelines and the nature of people who were affected and how they were affected, we didn't want to start addressing these concerns until we had a full picture of what was happening," she said.

McLaren said the company is giving all customers who visited the pool in the specific time frame a credit of $58.

I wonder after they settle the upcoming class action lawsuit will they be able to reopen. I can see the headline now. We’ve sanitized the establishment, installed a next Gen state of the art UV and salt system. We guarantee you won’t get a staph infection. If you do get a staph infection and they have to amputate a leg or arm we will cover the artificial limb.

I think I will pass on going to this place because I so like bathing in the same bath water that hundreds of people have peed in or dip their swamp d!€ks or sh!t caked a$$e&.

And if prostitution was legalized would the facilities and service providers have any liability for patrons contracting this or that…? Follow the money for the answers.

Wow, nothing beats good old fashioned chlorine.

This tells me one thing.

Management does not understand, nor take seriously, the need for water purification. They are all about the fluff, like the music, fresh towels, aromas, etc etc. But proper sanitation and water treatment? That's just inconsequential and boring mathematics to them.

Have been to the one in Winnipeg, loved it, very peaceful.
Went to the one in Gatineau, facilities were just as nice, but the clientele made it less enjoyable. Full of cackling hill-billies who just didn’t understand the beauty of silence.
