No, CHIC (Canadian Highways International Corporation, aka Dufferin and Armbro Construction) designed and built the first leg of the highway to MTO standards, but the province did pay for it, so ended up owning it, with CHIC hired on to run the thing.

Originally, it was supposed to be Design, Build, Finance, Operate.

Somehow the "Finance" angle fell through.

Along comes Mike Harris, and he figured, fuck it, good source of income and sold it to SLF on the proviso that they also design and build and this time pay for the second leg.

Orginally, CHIC was to have a 25 year lease at which time it would flip to the province and then it would become a highway like any other.

Wrong a roonie.

Now the deal has been extended to 100 years and the SLF is a joint venture between SNC Lavalin and Ferrovival of Spain (the majority shareholder)

The part that really really bugs my ass is the leg that was SUPPOSED TO BE Highway 403 somehow got included in the pot.

That section of 403 had been on the books since the 50's and Harris somehow just managed to say, oh well, you can have that too.

It's gotta be the most expensive road to travel on in the world.

When I drive along the New York State Thruway from Buffalo to the western end of the state at the Pa. border, about a 100 mile drive, it costs $2.10 U.S. 407 is a fucking joke but the owners are the only ones who can laugh (all the way to the bank).

I get 407 bills for previous owners of my house. I've stopped now, but after years of sending them back "Not at this address...", they still come. The bill is now at least 6 years old, and always states "Your account is seriously past due..." Either this person no longer drives, or 407 corp is spineless about bill collecting. It seriously brings in to doubt why anybody should ever pay any 407 bill ever.

The province did build the orignal 407, from Oakville to Markham... and sold it

BTW.. you can get a ticket for driving a pickup truck with the tailgate down on the 407

Here in Michigan, we have NO pay roads.

No red light cameras, no drunk driving check points, no safety checks for cars, no smog test for any year cars.

:)

Forgot, no car pool lanes. The state was thinking about them but then found out, Michigan has no laws for them, so on 1 road, they are going to try an "honor system" for a car pool lane.

The signs will go up but the police can not ticket you if you are alone in the car pool lane--isn't that nice.

But it doesn't come from toll roads. That goes straight into the hands of Cortez the Killer's descendants in Spain.

Yep, 1 trip to a doctor is $75-thats with no test, around $100 to get the medication and thats just for something like a running nose with a cold.

My brother got an infection after getting his leg cut, total cost was around $300 and he got the medication for free from the doctors office, otherwise it would have been around $500.

Total BS

The Ministry is once again collecting unpaid 407 tolls when you renew the vehicle license

compare US and Canadian tax rates and then tell us again about free health care ........ and if it's free why do we need additional health coverage? And let's not even start on wait times for diagnostic testing ......

sorry to hijack the friendly 407 thread .... back to the highway lovefest!

My wife had an outstanding ETR bill. It gathered interest for a year until I bought her a new car. Couldnt get new plates until she paid it.

Over the years I have been able to avoid the 407, however about a month ago I made a wrong turn on the highway and wound up on the 407.

The cost of driving on the 407 ETR to the next 407 exit was:

$0.41 Toll charge
$3.35 Video Charge
$2.00 Account Fee

$5.76 Total Due

Add the time and cost of writing a cheque, with postage, and it seems to me to be an outrageous cost/charge. The question is, what happens if I don’t pay it?
You admit that you made a mistake and got on the highway. Pay up and suck it up. ETR is on most (if not all) bank online bacnking systems, you don't even have to write a cheque. Or you can take the money in cash and drive to their office at near the 427 & 407 and give it to them in person.

Really Retired.....REALLY!
AFAIK you can still renew your license but you will not be able to get new plates or renew old ones until the tolls are paid.

What if someone changed their name before they came back to Ontario?
