Forrest Gump is a humanist fantasy, which is what the Academy likes. It won for the same reasons The Shape of Water won. Pulp Fiction came out the same year, Quentin Tarantino makes entertaining films but he dehumanizes his characters which the Academy doesn't like.

There is no better example to dismiss the Oscars voters as know nothings than the Pulp Fiction. A movie that really stood out from the rest, great, multiple and inter twining story lines with inspired writing and acting...yet, it went right over the heads of the Academy.

That settles it, I'll have to sign up for Prime. Riz Ahmed floored me in The Night of... the best limited series prior to The Queen's Gambit. I wasn't expecting that much range. I figured the show was a contest of wills between his defense lawyer (John Turturro) and the lead detective (Billy Camp) which for the most part it was. Ahmed didn't take a back seat them, he played it in such way that you were never sure if he was guilty or innocent. Billy Camp was also in The Queen's Gambit, Joker and Birdman, eventually he needs to be acclaimed for his brilliant character work.

As much as I respect Riz Ahmed, no film this year measures up to The Queen's Gambit. Billy Camp is Mr. Shaibel.

The Queen’s Gambit was brilliant. Have you ever seen Nightcrawler with Jake Gyllenhaal? A fantastic movie. That’s the first time I saw Riz Ahmed. He plays a dim-witted valley guy from California. After the movie I looked him up on IMDB, and I was stunned that he’s a Brit. He nailed the lazy American suburban dude manner of speech.

I've seen Pulp Fiction several times jc, yes it was a groundbreaking film - so was Reservoir Dogs. There's a problem with Tarantino films, he's amoral, he has no belief system. As such he's hardly changed since the mid-90's and after awhile you become immune to his long dialogues and brutal violence. His films are like cigarettes, you know they're bad for you but you keep on watching after. After taking in Django Unchained in the theater I felt like I was covered in shit. My infatuation with him ended with Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, I couldn't stand that film.

I've been meaning to watch Nightcrawler but so far haven't gotten around to it. Which streaming service is it on?

Two schleppers having fun, this is funny.

I didn't find the Pulp Fiction all that violent. The violence in that movie is not gratuitous, it follows the story line. It was shot graphically, true enough, but that's just a style. I disagree that morality or a belief system is necessary to produce compelling entertainment because, in the end, that's all it is-entertainment. And the Pulp Fiction is a compelling entertainment, even today.

Nightcrawler is on Netflix. Rene Russo is also superb in the movie, and Gyllenhaal should have won an Oscar.

One of my top 3 movies. The genius of the movie is the dialogue.

I forgot about Shape of Water.

It's a fun movie about Aquaman falling in love.

From what I remember.

I think he dies in the end, hence the depression factor.

Mr. Orifice, do you have a problem with eating pussy?

Doug Jones is the Aquaman, forget Jason Mamoa's version, he's for kiddies. A triumph for our film industry, shot mainly at Cinescape Studios on Eastern Av/DVP. Michael Shannon was awesome as usual and so sadistic, finally his number is called and has to confront Aquaman man to fish. His final words are priceless "you really are a God".

Doug Jones is Andy Serkis's peer, he's appeared in several of Gigi Del Toro's project including The Strain, Hell Boy and Pan's Labarinth where he played The Apparition with his eyes on his palms. He also plays Commander Saru on St:Discovery - but that show fell through the floor when they killed of Jason Isaacs (Captain Lorca). He'll next appear in an update of Nosferatu, that's a challenge. Max Schrek, Klaus Kinski and Willem Dafoe were all excellent in the role. Del Toro's next film should be a humdinger, it's called Nightmare Alley. If anyone is capable of making a great film-noir it's him.

I'm also happy to report that kiddie Aquaman is going ahead with Amber Heard in an expanded role.

Happy birthday to a charming and elegant man: Rory McCann turns 52 today. After awhile he became the only reason to keep watching Game of Thrones, The Hound was so cute!

Currently he has a great gig with Magellan TV, they are currently the best channel for historical dramatizations and documentaries. He's playing another sweet man, Attila the Hun.

There's no joy at the Oscars.

Only movies of war, sickness and injustice make the cut.

I can't name even one Oscar movie with an alien in it.

The real suffering is watching the bore-fest.

I tried to watch that "Lady Bird" thing, honestly ... yawn.
Moonlight, I still don't know what it was about. I was busy playing computer chess and left it on for noise.
I kept making fun of the Lion guy, like going "he's a lion, roar, roar". His suffering gives India a bad name.

Please avoid Oscar movies.
Don't waste your life watching suffering, when you can watch joy and laughter. Thanks.
The Return of the King had plenty of orcs, elves, dwarves, hobbits, wizards and dragons.

Is Marvel bowing to SJWs? Tony Leung is supposed to play The Mandarin, but that character is too controversial for sensitive types. The character is known as Wenwu instead. The story of Shang -Chi is loosely based on Shakespeare Henry IV Part II. The Mandarin is a warlord with Genghis Khan ambitions. He learns the secrets of the Shaolin monks then betrays them. The fallen monks become his elite army. His son Shang Chi breaks away only to be brought back into his father's sphere.
Other than getting rid of The Mandarin's more obvious "Fu Manchu" aspects, it doesn't look like they are changing the basic story much at all.

"LOS ANGELES — The television audience for Sunday’s Academy Awards dropped to a record low of 9.85 million viewers on Walt Disney Co’s ABC, according to a preliminary estimate cited by Hollywood publication Variety.

That represented a 58% decline from last year, Variety said. (Reporting by Lisa Richwine)"
