Right, absolutely nothing illegal about what he did.

He went through the process of requesting that land through the proper avenues
Who the fuck said anything about illegal?

It was disingenuous of him to quietly try to purchase public land for his own private use.. But that's not illegal.

But WHENEVER a top political figure attempts to gain from the sale of a public asset it SHOULD BE FUCKING looked into.. In this case, The Star took it upon themselves to look into.

It's actually quite brilliant.. He talks like them, walks like them, has weaknesses like them.. And then he takes these people (who don't fully understand city politics or how to run a city) and he tells them that it's the "Elite" that are costing them money.. He tells them that he knows how to fix things for them.. He promises them shit that they want (but can't ever have) like Subways for free, and Casinos that pay hundreds of million in taxes, and less traffic for cars (without anybody having to actually stop driving their car).. When council is forced to vote down these nonsensical schemes, he just tells the people "It's not my fault, it's the 'Elites' on council that are against me"..

No conflict of interest at all for the city employees reviewing their bosses unusual request to buy a park. I am sure that they felt very secure in their jobs.

When the mayor is trying to convert public park land to his own private use, you are damned right, that sort of dirty corrupt practice needs to be thoroughly exposed.
Cry me a river Fuji.

From what I understand, he's only tried to BUY a very small piece of vast parkland (hey I know, he lives on my mom's street). Whether the city approves it is another issue.

Gain from the sale of a public asset?

How could he gain anything if he wants to buy a public asset?

That's just another lie from the lying crack head.

He comes from a moneyed political family.

Ford has never had a real job, he's a career politician who's been able to fund his campaigns off his fathers business.
He appears likeable because he's a party animal, but he can't hold even a voluntary coaching job, let alone a real job.
He'd have been fired 20 times over if he was a city employee and not mayor.
Probably all true. Being a councillor was an easier job than perhaps running the family business, but they have enough hands there, so they put him into politics because that was their father's legacy.

Ummm... let's see...
How about using his position to pay a fraction of what the land is worth???
Or how about using his position to encourage a favourable outcome when in all probability any private citizen would be denied???

People don't care that he comes from money, because he still manages to seem "down to earth". People like him because they can relate to him. They like having somebody (who they feel) identifies with THEM in office.. Nothing more..

You're exaggerating Adam. Subways do produce less traffic since they don't take up road space as compared to streetcars or LRTs.

However, I think Ford got a lot of mileage from being overtly opposed to 'tax and spend' politics or politicians, and the majority bought that line. There were some gestures like removing the vehicle permit tax grab, or preventing future garbage strikes where possible, and reducing gridlock by pushing for subways (even though that might not have been the wisest choice), but Ford's antics are getting to the better of him.

We know there are better choices, but at the time, there were none with a similar or right of center platform.

The elites you refer to that the Ford's express disenchantment, are the established Conservatives who have rejected them, so they have lashed out at them. (I know a party exec who thinks RF is an idiot. Not a good Conservative role model, and neither is his brother for defending or associating with him, or having a reputation as a 'bully' or alleged previous drug dealer/user).

Stop spewing bullshit. He has one vote. It would subject to approval by council and subject to their rules and regulations and under intense scrutiny.

He's not that stupid. He's smart enough to function as a councillor and eventually get elected for Mayor. He didn't fumble at those debates (surprisingly, but my friend who's a lawyer felt they didn't attack him hard enough).

Remember, there are not-so-bright bosses or people in power that throw their weight around to achieve their goals. The difference with politicians, we can kick them out of office (thank God).

Agreed. And he completed the forms as "Rob Ford", not "Mayor Rob Ford", just like any other resident would do. Nothing illegal or corrupt about it. Followed the process like everyone else.
He wanted to adjust the fencing to gain more privacy, not to open a golf course for christ's sake.
So the Star decides that it's a story and that justifies them lurking and maintaining a presence at his house?
If they are so resourceful, couldn't they get everything they needed from the civil office? You actually need to take a picture of a park to get the story across?
Or do you need an excuse to be there, and possibly take a picture of something going on in his house or on his property to put on the front page and sell more papers?
If that's not harassment then I don't know what is.

In Ford's case "we" didn't kick him out of office, the councilors did. "We" didn't select the replacement, the councilors did. "We" didn't get a chance to vote, which is a key principle in democracy.
"We" better understand how our democratic rights were basically violated so that "we" don't become a communist state.

He's able to increase the size of his property...?

Are you being ironic by asking this question?

YES... "we" did by ELECTING those councillors into office... you idiot.
If you don't like how your councillors are going to represent you... DON'T VOTE FOR THEM.

Where is the proof he did that??
In the files of the TRCA if you want the original application he made, the report of the staff who evaluated and of the Authority who agreed with their recommendation and voted to nix the sale Rob wanted.

Or you could just go by the media reports of all of that, which were so widely published it's amazing you missed them. Perhaps if more folks like you actually tried to keep abreast of what's really going on, we wouldn't have wasted all this time with a known drug user and binging drunk as Mayor.

Seriously? Tell me all about how our democratic rights were violated when a bunch of councilors (who were also elected) reacted to their constituents by severely limiting the powers of an admitted drunk (who happens to be mayor)?

Oh wait.. I'm sorry.. You're right.. Rob Ford was elected.. The rest just wandered in one day and decided to take a seat.. Right?

Again, I understand that you really really want democracy to be this simplified "I voted, that's the end of it" kinda scenario.. Unfortunately (for you.. fortunate for the rest of civilization), democracy doesn't end at the ballot box. Mayor Rob Ford knew this.. He may not like it.. But he knew this, and no amount of whining from him (or any of his shrinking contingent of pig headed, blind, morally bankrupt, Ford Nationites) can change that..

Mayor Rob Ford seems to understand that he was elected into a weak mayor system, but insists on running things like it isn't.. Isn't that the definition of insanity.. If it isn't insanity then it's at least stupidity..

More twaddle. outside of a few village Town Meetings there hasn't been a democracy since Athens run the way you imagine, with the citizenry voting on everything directly. And my downtown ward alone has a bigger population than the town Pericles knew.

If 'we' are worried about becoming a communist state, 'we'd' better get back to electing Mayors and Councillors who can do their jobs. And have actual plans to do so. Commies have just as much trouble getting lying incompetent drunkards off the payroll as we do.

Best bet when voting: Wake up and do a bit of research, then make an i n t e l l i g e n t decision about who you vote for. Picking the vile-tempered, liar with an arrest record and a shattered upbringing he's never overcome and struggling with to this day, a guy who never earned an honest buck from anyone but us (and we disagree on the earned and honest part) and he makes unbelivable promises no one could ever keep, because 'he's just like us' ……. Not only is that an admissiopn of stupidity, it's the most insulting thing anyone has ever said about the people of Toronto, or even of the minority that is Ford Nation.

No matter how you try to blame everyone but the guy you picked, his flame-out has been a disaster for more than him. Hardly an endorsement of the democratic process. And if he was some sort of helpless victim and not responsible, why ever did he or anyone imagine he could be mayor?
