OH for FUCK sakes! Olivia Chow as MAYOR!!?? You've GOT to be kidding!

This is the same hypocrite that was living in public subsidized housing, in the early 90's, during which her and her socialist husband were pulling in well in excess of $150G's!

Here here, however, a dear friend told me that the Layton's paid a higher amount for the coop they were living in - IOW they had disclosed their income. Is this possible or make sense?

That's a tired argument, AJ. You can come up with better ones.

It's well-documented that they paid market value to live in that housing co-op. In other words, in addition to the rent charged for their unit, they paid the co-op an additional amount equivalent to the CMHC subsidy. The co-op board argued a mix of tenant incomes improved the success/value of the co-op. There was a formal investigation into accusations they abused the system, but Layton and Chow were cleared of any allegations of wrong-doing.

Thanks for that.

I don't live in the GTA but if she were to be elected mayor...wow,your in a lot of trouble.Be prepaired to hug a tree and see your taxes go through the roof to pay for social housing, daycare, public transit and all the other socialist agenda.Oh, and most likely a carbon tax of some sort.
I agree 100%. She's a typical career politician who has accomplished nothing. Unfortunately she would garner most of the Asian vote but not mine (I'm Asian and can't stand her), just by being Asian. She would be like Miller, city expenses would rise uncontrollably, and we would get nothing in return except stronger unions and more taxes. I voted for Ford last time and would do so again.

As for Olivia Chow as mayor ... well, maybe not.

But then again:

Sometimes reality can be stranger than fiction.
I was saying so partially as a matter of fact, because they DID live in public housing... then, after they got caught, they came up with all the other crap about fair market value/ equivalency payments etc... (As a point of reference, I myself lived in the GTA during that same time, with my girlfriend at the time, and somehow we scraped enough $$ together to pay for a basement apartment... so ya, its a point of contention... )

And partially with tongue planted firmly in cheek, because this all DID happened 20+ years ago... same with Ford's family's (or is it families?) alleged involvement with marijuana.

As for Olivia as Mayor...

Please explain what Ford had accomplished before being elected mayor.

Thanks for that.
I believe that when they first moved in they paid whatever rent was asked. Their decision to move there was supposedly based on demonstrating solidarity with "ordinary folk." Within a year or so, I believe, the Toronto Star ran an article questioning appropriateness of someone at their salary level enjoying the benefit of CMHC subsidy. They immediately responded by voluntarily topping the amount and continuing to live there as the only co-op members paying market value, if I recall correctly.

Some interesting observations:

• Toronto Star apparently questions the actions and lifestyle of politicians on the left as well as on the right.

• Some politicians whose actions are challenged based on perception of wrongdoing own up and take immediate corrective action.

She's been asked more than once in interviews if she was interested and each time said no. I'd worry about other more important things.

From an article in the Star...I'd start worrying

" While the election, which will be held on Oct. 27, 2014, doesn’t officially start until Jan. 2 when candidates can start to file formal campaign papers to run, both Chow and Ford are actively running right now.

Over the summer, Chow has solidified her election team, devised a fundraising campaign, worked on some policy papers and, importantly, received assurances that other potential left and centre-left candidates, notably councillors Adam Vaughan and Shelley Carroll, would not enter the race."

You are a rational voter with focus, unlike some others here who take issue with extraneous issues or allegations.

I guess this proves she's a liar too now.

One very big point the left like to leave out,...when the champagne pinkos moved in to the condo,...it was registered under chows mother's name.
2nd,...when they were caught,...they THEN decided to top up the rate.
3rd,...I would not call them "ordinary folk."

I'm in the "anybody but Ford" crowd.. The guy may have some okay policies, but he also has a lot of shitty ones.. And on the good policies he's incapable of building consensus so virtually nothing good is going to come out of Ford EVER.. Just a lot of whiny hot air about how unfair everybody is to him and how everybody is always out to get him and how nobody cares about Toronto like he does..

Having said that I'd rather see John Tory as our mayor over Olivia Chow (a thousand times over). That guy is a level headed conservative.. Which means that Ford Nation will be refering to him as a "Red Tory"..

The trouble is I don't think John Tory could steal enough votes from Chow & Ford to come out ahead.. And there's no way neither of them are running.. So it's either the worst from the left or the worst from the right.. Amalgamation sucks a nut sack..

I am a huge fan of John Tory, he comes across as super intelligent, thoughtful, well spoken, and well liked by everybody, in other words not suitable for politics. I would vote for him in a heartbeat over anyone but he's already lost a mayoral election and a provincial election and I doubt he would enter politics again. For the Ford haters, who else would you have preferred to win the last election? Smitherman? Pantalone? Rossi?

I think there's still hope for John Tory to run. Especially if Vaughan, Chow, and Carroll all run.

To answer your question, I would have happily voted for Rossi if he had bothered to stick it out.

Alternatively, I think Pantalone would have been better than Ford as well (although still not a great mayor) which is why I voted for him..

However, I would never vote for Smitherman. If there is one person who would have done his job worse than Ford, it's Smitherman.

I think both the left and right need to choose one candidate, there's too much vote splitting in Municipal politics.
