The EPA was quiet for a week and a half after this train derailment and the big explosion, that's the ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY.

Burning it is effective and sadly the best option to get rid of it after a spill. The two problems are how much got in the groundwater first and the other chemicals that were also burnt that do remain toxic in the air.
There's also the inconvenient harsh truth that is not politically palatable in these situations.
What is the EPA supposed to say... that everyone in that area just got fucked for life? Though absolutely true it would cause a frenzy and the future lawsuits would be over quickly due to that admission.
The EPA's top priority is to downplay the severity of the situation to maintain peace, control, and minimize the damages in the lawsuits that will be pending in short order. It's just not as easy to accomplish anymore when any Joe Blow can take video of what's happening on the ground and post it on the internet for instant worldwide consumption.
