So i've never bought a phone, I've always got whatever phone was free from Bell as long as I signed up for their plan...that was fine...I currently have an Iphone 7.

The price for phones is a little, or a lot, more than I want to pay...

Is there any way around this or am I going to have to pay these high prices...or in other words, am I just fucked.

iPhone 7 about 6 years old. If you have been with Apple for this long then you probably want to stick with Apple phone so your apps and shit transfer over. If you have nothing to carry over and do not care about Apple, then you can get a cheap android phone.

Check around. Compare prices. Go into a Rogers store and see what kind of deal they can offer. Same for Fido and others.

Phones are not free when you sign into a plan. The monthly costs are jacked up so that the provider claws back the costs for that particular phone.
Freedom Mobile actually have some good deals. The only issue is their network coverage in more remote areas. Otherwise they have more enticing plans than other providers. Best Buy had a $25 per month plan that included 3 GB of data, unlimited Canada wide Calling and International texting. You could then select the unlocked phones that Best Buy had on Special, and accordingly they added it on to the monthly payment.

I do want to stay with Apple, I have an Ipad and Apple laptop to go with them...but holy fuck, $900-$1400 is a lot of coin for something that I don't use a lot...it hardly ever rings, don't have a large network of people that I exchange messages with, can answer my emails at home, don't have twitter/facebook/instagram or any of that...Iphone7 has been great to last this long.

Apple is now offering monthly interest-free payments for phones and laptops. So, for example, you could get the iPhone 13 for $65/month. It still costs $1600, but you spread out the pain.

Go to any phone repair place and buy second hand. I bought an IPhone8 a couple weeks ago for $250.

I'm still using an IPhone7 that I bought for $250 in 2019. When I bought the 7, I also got a 6 as a back-up for $150. They all work fine.

If you don't use your often, you should really think about going to Freedom. Not only will you pay considerably less for a perfectly good android phone but you will also save a lot on your monthly bill. It seems that having apple across the board for you has little to no advantages. Also gives you a perk into the android realm.

Costco cellular kiosk. Often times they have promos that bring the cost down. We bought three iPhones there and got $600 in cash cards and additional discounts off our monthly plans. One 12 Pro, one 12, and one 11 about six months ago. Oh, and each with a car charger and decent wireless ear buds (not Apple).

There are a few things to consider:
1) are you happy with your current plan?
2) do you want to upgrade to a newer device?
3) do you have a monthly budget or do you want to buy a phone outright?

By answering these 3 questions, you’ll get better tailored advice. For one, you don’t need to change your plan unless you want to take advantage of a new offer. Two, newer devices are nice, but not necessary (fixing batteries on your 7 is a very easy swap).Three, knowing what your budget is or what you’re willing to spend, we can recommend options. As Mandrill stated, you can get newer phones cheap, or you can get a newer model for a big discount with a new package deal.

Check Facebook marketplace. Lots of good offers for new plans with phones or used phones if you want to stick with your existing plan

Go to www.telus.com
Go to Mobility > Phones > Certified Pre-Owned

You can get lightly used Apple phones with full Telus warranty (payments for 24 months)

iPhone 12 Pro Max for $27.50/month
iPhone 12 Pro for $20.17/month
iPhone 12 for $14.58/month

Typical plan would be $60-70/month

If you live in the city, then Freedom Mobile is a viable option.

You can get a brand new iPhone 13 for $80/month
iPhone 12 for $70/month
iPhone 11 for $60/month
It comes with a plan - voice and 20GB fast LTE data.

I bought my iPhone 7 Plus new from Costco as I didn't want to change my plan. I think it was $750 for the 128GB. I just bought a used but virtually new 12 Pro Max 256GB for $1,200 cash. Rogers wants well over $2,000 for the 13 Pro Max 256GB. Sorry but it's not worth $800-$900 more than the 12. If you want to spend less, get a slightly older model.

If you do buy used, make sure to check the battery percentage. I've seen 12s range from 90-100%.

The best time to buy a new device is when the device is being phased out. You can then get it at a fraction of the price as Apple and Samsung will be desperately trying to promote the features in these new devices and are then dropping the prices of the old devices. I prefer the iPhone's features and am used to their features but will no longer pay their ridiculously overpriced brand new devices. You have to be cautious about purchasing used devices that are even sold through Best Buy. Marketplace did a recent documentary of the reliability of these items and it was not very encouraging. Best Buy does not take full responsibility on the quality of them.
