my chimney liner HEADACHE

So I posted here before about chimney liners and I decided to get one. So they came today to install it, they can't. Theres some obstructions in the chimney so the liner won't go down. So it seems that the only way I can lift the violation i got for the chimney liner for the new water heater is to get a direct vent water heater and now a new furance. They told me that even if I get a direct vent water heater, I still need one for the furnace. Now I have to spend 4 grands on a furnace

4 grand for a furnace sounds good. Check for government and private rebates. you will need at least 3 holes in your wall for the new furnace and water heater.

Some workmen will stick a gun to your ribs and hold you up. I am not saying this is what happened in your case, but I have heard it many times where they will sell stuff that they know will need more equipment and work to do the job properly.

I had a couple of guys show up with a load of gypsum board for a renovation. They hemmed and hawed and told me it was hard to get the boards in and they might not be able to do it. ( meaning, tip or no gypsum boards today ) I sent them packing. They came back with the same order three days later.

was your furnace still working and hooked up to your chiminy and do you still need to replace the furnace?

If it is a water heater needed get a direct vent you can go with a powervent waterheater.

If this was a door to door sale/telemarketing forget about it and use what you have as the cost of liner will blow any budjet.

Also you could haggle with them to get the liner for free or even reduce the price of furnace/ac unit.

the furance is still working great, its 20 years old but I heard the older ones are built like a horse. My gas bill is pretty good so the savings on getting a new HE furance would be nothing really. It would take me about 20 years of savings from the HE to pay it off. Its connected to the water heater and vented to the chimney. Can't install a liner anymore since it won't fit, theres a few obstructions in it.

Installing liners in old chimneys is a pain in the ass. Houses over 50 years don't have clay liners in the chimneys. The inside is unfinished masonry. It only takes a small piece of of masonry to rip the liner apart

obstruction is mortor. Sloppy mortor work when they built this house. Supposedly the vent pipe down the chimney is crushed a bit because they didn't let the mortor set before they built on top of it.

Can you access the top of the chimney,use a length of pipe and a strong flashlight so you can see what your doing,I'll bet that mortar will break off sliding the pipe up and down through the chimney,then put a flexible liner in,you can get them that are rated for gas,flexible liners are made for going through old chimneys that don't have a clay liner

tHe guys who tried to install it did that. The end of the liner was really squished. They tried to fit a 5 inch down and couldnt. They said they could see the hole but the hole got really small, about 3 inch and can't get it thru.

Pokergod, who gave you a violation ticket? I would do a direct vent for the water heater. 4 grands for a new furnace is too much, unless you need a new one. Shouldn't be more than $2000 unless you need a big one. Don't go with compnsumer gas or enbridge. Get a private contractor is much cheaper. If you want I can pm you the number of a couple of contractors that I use

Reliance gave me the violation. I need a 75 000 btu unit, bthey also told me that direct vent is not a option. i am not in the gta but thx.
