I suspect this old guy was put forward as a war veteran and invited to the parliamentary event without anyone figuring out that he might have been fighting for a German-aligned unit - as most of those old Uke dudes did.

The 14th Galician SS is a pretty controversial military unit and I'm sure that they would have avoided inviting him and shouting out to him, had they but realized his background. But that's a far cry from branding the old fellow a nazi war criminal.

The thing about Western values and principles is… you have to stick to them even when it’s not comfortable or convenient. We should not be torturing prisoners. Period. Of all the units in WW2, Waffen SS were noted for being the most fanatical and loyal, best trained and committed the most war crimes of any. Combined with the fact that they answered to Hitler himself and were armed with the very best cutting edge weapons . Many a village in Eastern Russia were burned to the ground with no living witnesses to report the crime.
