I dated a Ukrainian-Canadian girl when I was a kid and learned Uke-lore from her fam. Lots of the old Ukrainian uncles and grandpas had fought the Reds and then escaped west.
I suspect this old guy was put forward as a war veteran and invited to the parliamentary event without anyone figuring out that he might have been fighting for a German-aligned unit - as most of those old Uke dudes did.
The 14th Galician SS is a pretty controversial military unit and I'm sure that they would have avoided inviting him and shouting out to him, had they but realized his background. But that's a far cry from branding the old fellow a nazi war criminal.

Of all the units in WW2, Waffen SS were noted for being the most fanatical and loyal, best trained and committed the most war crimes of any.
