On the slopes of Mount Parnassus, Greece
Last week Mike Johnson told a nice story on TSN's Overdrive. In his first year with the Leafs he was nervously sitting in the dressing room worried about how he should play to make a good impression. All of a sudden, Larry Murphy sits next to him despite the fact he didn't know Johnson. Murphy then said to him "hey kid, whatever you did to get here, just do that". Johnson was relieved, first, because Murphy actually spoke to him, and, second, because it was good advice. A class act.
Stories like that are good to read...Thanks.

Larry Murphy was unfairly maligned during his time with the Toronto Kumquats. He went on to win a Stanley Cup with the Red Wings. Funny how fate intervenes, Harold Ballard had the chance to sign Jim Devellano. Easy one would think, since he's from the same neighbourhood as Mark Giordano. Harold hated wops, so he signed for the Detroit Red Wings.

Another WTF Story.

Whoa Cowboy, you have it wrong. I bear no animosity toward Les Habitants much less the city of Montreal. I reserve my venom for the limp wrists of Philadelphia, otherwise known as the flyers. Always have always will.

Trying to stay in a Happy Place
Habs beat the Bruins 4-1
Now have a 2 point lead over the Rangers (both have played 75 games) and a 4 point lead over Columbus (who has a game in hand) for the second wildcard spot.

Should be an exciting down to the wire finish to the season.

It got painfully close about 5 days ago. FFA probably had some hope again, and I was thinking with all the teams bunched we were clearly less than 50/50.
But 3 straight wins quickly changes things.

I'm expecting that the wild card spots in the east won't be resolved till the final game of the season. Habs need to win everything at this point if they are going to make it

The Rangers have 32 regulation wins, the Habs 26. If the NHL gave 3 pts for a regulation wins, the Habs would be far out of a playoff spot.

No they would not be far out of a playoff spot. They would only be 4 points out of a playoff spot with 7 games left. Far from being eliminated, especially since you can make up 3 points in one night. Furthermore Montreal would be 6 points ahead of anybody else behind them... so it would be a two team race for one spot.

Standings in the East Would be

Ottawa 117
New York 111
-------------
Montreal 107
Detroit 101
Columbus 101

I would prefer the 3-2-1-0 system. That being said, game results would not have been exactly the same this year if that was the system. Some teams would play very differently in the 3rd period.

Glam forgot to add Montreal's OT wins and losses. They get points for those too and not just regulation wins and Montreal has plenty of OT pts. They would have 29 OT pts which would equate to almost 10 regulation wins. NYR has 32 regulation losses, Montreal has 30 so Rangers have played more games where they acquired zero pts in either pt scoring system.

Huge day for the Canadiens, as the gap widens with only 6 games left.

Win 3-2
And the two closest chasers lose
Rangers lose 4-0
Columbus loses 5-0 (thanks Leafs)

8. Montreal 83 (6 games left)
9. NYR 79 (6)
10. CBJ 77 (7)
Det 77 (7)
12. NYI 76 (7)

Habs beat the Pathers twice, so Leafs return the favor.

Rangers imploding … got beat handily last night. I thought they were the biggest threat.

Habs now have 85 points up 6 points on 2 teams with 5 games to go… wings have 6 left and rangers have 5 left.

Tonight’s game against the Wings is huge to basically knock them out.

Win tonight and there are chances 87 is enough to slide in.
