Rangers imploding … got beat handily last night. I thought they were the biggest threat.

Habs now have 85 points up 6 points on 2 teams with 5 games to go… wings have 6 left and rangers have 5 left.

Tonight’s game against the Wings is huge to basically knock them out.

Win tonight and there are chances 87 is enough to slide in.
I'm not counting the Rangers out till they are mathematically eliminated. Inspite of how their poor play of late, they are still a good team.

Canadiens current magic number is 7 points.
Theoretically the Red Wings could get to 91, and Habs would need to get 92 due to tiebreakers.

But if they win tonight in regulation against Detroit that magic number goes down to 3 points.
Alternatively if Detroit wins they are only 4 points behind with a game in hand, and the tie-breaker.

I was worried about the Rangers, but they are a mess. I think they have basically given up inside the room and they can't turn this around and win 4 of their remaining 5.
I'm more worried about the Red Wings (see above)

Does not help that the Rangers have Drury as GM... Then who decides his focus player should be JT Miller... A player no one wants in a locker room...

Demidov contract terminated, it appears he is officially coming over to play some of the Habs final games of the season.

Still no 100% clarity on playoff eligibility-- my gut says no, and social media rando's saying not eligible. But have not heard confirmed from a great source.

Some hockey analysts feel the countdown is on for a change in the Rangers coaching position.

Well after Detroit got 22 shots in the first period alone, I'm inclined to believe you are right

Sens are in the playoffs!!....Looks like they'll draw the Leafs in the first round.

Ottawa has handled them all year and this is the most favourable matchup for them but...

Toronto has a history of bouncing them out in the post season.

Oh and I'm happy for the fans of Les Habs...If they get Washington that's a high hurdle though.

Rangers losing tonight 6-4, with 4 minutes to play.

The magic number for the Habs to eliminate the Rangers is 1 point. (Rangers would have to win all final 4 games and Habs lose all 4 in regulation)

Magic number is still 3 points; Detroit, NYI, and Columbus are not eliminated.

That is correct, but I I never claimed otherwise,

In my post I said the magic number to eliminate the Rangers is 1. The Rangers had been viewed as the biggest threat once the Habs could be a deemed a real contender to make the playoffs in early March. They have all but officially imploded.

Ottawa clinched so they may rest some players. If Montreal beats the Sens that could setup an interesting game vs the Leafs on Sat.

I'm not sure if Ottawa has any strong preference between Toronto / TB or Washington, so you are correct in that they have no incentive to push injured or tired players at this point.

That being said Ottawa will not have played in 3 days the night they play Montreal. I'm sure Ullmark will be starting to keep him fresh. I think if they rest players it will be in the next 2 games after -- Philly and Chicago. There is also still a bit of a "code", to try to rest players against weaker teams, and not those fighting for the playoffs.
