Congrats to you.

I mentioned that immigrants often start at or near the bottom of the corporate hierarchy. It was not meant as a slight on immigrants but one of our members got really upset about that. You are a living example of what I meant.

In other examples, immigrant parents work in menial jobs (e.g. driving a cab) so their children can do better in life. Again this is not meant to slight immigrants but just a fact of life.

I assume not too many immigrants are millionaires and/or pull down 6 figure salaries on day one.

BTW: Some Canadians blame rich immigrants for driving up house prices but that is another story.
Times are different. Many more immigrants come to Canada now with a higher level of money, skill, and/or education as compared to immigrants in the past.

Yes, but Loblaws, No Frills, Food Basics, Sobeys, Longo's and Farm Boy, aren't on strike. As well, as Costco and Wal mart, aren't on strike either. IMHO, a lot of former Metro shoppers, will go to some or all of these non-striking stores, and never return back, to Metro.
Wouldn't conservative leaning people who're anti-union flock there to show support for Metro standing up to the union.

The primary purpose of blue collar unions is to allow stupid people to be able to afford to buy cars.
Somebody has to buy those Fords.

Why has nobody here made the link between low pay like this, where Metro workers have to use the food banks because they can't afford food from Metro and the tent cities in the parks that they find so offensive?
Its all the same thing.

If DoFo wants to call grocery workers 'essential workers' he should pay them a living wage.
His cancelling of the minimum wage boost gave Loblaws owners a $116 million bonus.

I'm sure a lot of people (myself included), will never shop at Metro again!! This Metro strike has gone on, for too long, already!!

In the last 10 years or so, I have noticed that many people in the health care business, including clinics, doctor's offices and hospitals are immigrants, many from Asian countries and fulfil many high end positions that are badly needed. I myself was looking for a family doctor and having trouble finding one but luckily found a doctor taking new patients. She happens to come from India and is excellent, and she is very attractive too. LOL.

I'll shop there the first day they reopen.
There is a huge difference in a strike of a private company that basically affects a small percentage of people compared to the B.C dock workers strike that affects everyone in this country and IMO should not be allowed.

For me it is all about price and convenience. Metro is low on my priority list unless there is a special and I am passing close by. Some people do not have a choice, for them these places are the closest and they may not have a car. I buy in bulk whenever I see a good price. Not only do you save money by buying bulk, you will not have to keep an eye out all the time for special prices. Fresh food is another thing, I zip in at off peak hours in the morning and get it before it is gone the crazed mobs get at the goods.

Truth be told, the people doing these jobs can easily be replaced by students (part-time) and immigrants.
Truth be told when they work in office jobs and in the corporate world its "they are taking our jobs" but when they work service industry jobs we have folks like you mentioning them. Students today make more money online and through other methods/alternatives. Wake up it's not the early or mid 2000s anymore a lot has changed when it comes to service level jobs. You say easily replaced but these corporations make millions/billions in profit but refuse to pay their workers a liveable wage.

You clearly don't have experience speaking with immigrants who were doctors and engineers in their countries but were sold the dream of greener pastures which was a false fallacy. As a result, they go into survival mode where they have to work these service jobs as a steeping stool just to survive.

Fair enough. However, in that case the government should classify them as essential workers. If there is an impasse in contract negotiations it should go to binding arbitration. Both sides will have to abide by the arbitrators ruling.

Good strategy, however for some people bulk buying is not a viable option. Not everyone has the room to store items bought in large quantities. And if you're single there is only so much of an item you can eat. I learned this the first time I went to Costco. I wanted to buy a jar of pickles, but the jar they were selling would barely fit in my fridge. Then I would have to eat the same pickles for about 3 months afterwards or it would spoil.

For all the slagging of immigrants and people that work in these fields. I weep for my children, and where society is heading. How fast everyone here, has forgotten the first 6 months of Covid.

While most of you, were sitting at home collecting paychecks in your Pajamas…who was holding the system together? Not you…

…..delivering your food ( most of you probably wouldn’t even know how to clean and cook a squirrel), who was in the stores, who was making sure gas pumps were operational, who was picking up your garbage…...Who bore the brunt of lockdowns and lost jobs, lost homes, lost savings…who statistically ended up in Covid wards, taking it on the chin…so you all could collect paychecks in your pajamas and never crack a nail…

I recall when it all started there was a popular meme on Facebook. Basically a human body, organs, nervous system, skeletal structure. It was “society”…Some are the brains, some are the organs, some this and that. Some the back bone…

what happens when the backbone collapses.

I don't disagree but the post by that other poster seems to imply that all immigrants now are rich and/or have jobs with 6 figure salaries. No, he did not offer any evidence/proof/support.

He himself said he would return to India if he had the money.

You have to pick and choose your items dependent on ability, need and space for storage. I load up one 4 containers of presidents coffee when it is on sale. Other items I load up on is PC brand evaporated milk, tooth paste, hair mouse.. ect. ect. Three or four items does not take up a lot of space. Like I said, it is not only about savings, it is also about convenience.

Helpful Household Tip : Roast your PC coffee beans in an iron skillet ( if you do it in a stainless steel pan it will darken the pan )
let cool and grind, use PC No Name brand evaporated milk in your coffee. * 33% evaporated milk/66% regular milk. = The best cup of coffee you can make at home.

Many members of TERB may or may not be at this time contributing to society, they may have made their contributions in the past. It is all in the luck of the draw who you are born as. If you born as Bezos, Trump, Musk, Gates, Epstein, Prince Andrew or an impoverished migrant, it is all in the luck of the draw.

I do believe that humanity is headed into a dark age where the world gets harder to live in. Just as lives of baby boomers got easier and we got more and better things. It will be harder for the younger generations and they will have to work harder and get less.

In the short term, there will be wage inflation where people want more money because they have less buying power because of price inflation. Some will get more wages, but this will cause more price inflation. When there is more unemployment then the demands for higher wages will stop. In the middle term, the world will go through a roller coaster ride as the economy recovers and recedes.

To answer your question : What happens when the backbone collapses? The world may come to a "Mad Max" scenario, but I will be long gone by then.
