FIRED means cause so no you can not just randomly fire someone you don't like
Even for layoff you can decline the offered severance and fight for more
ON has similar laws but BC is even more leaning to employee side than here
Employers must generally give employees written notice or payment based on how long the employee has worked before ending a job. There are cases where no notice or compensation is required or different circumstances for group layoffs.

As you can clearly see they are NOT allowed to fire him because the Canucks are not operating right now
(read section for when they are not allowed to give written notice)
And obv there is no just cause since nothing he did would have violated anything in his terms of employment or contract whichever he is under (I suspect employee though... we are talking 20 years of tenure... even a layoff would be costly not even factoring in the illegal nature of this firing or the public defamation of announcing it to the media; the owner TWEETED to the media he was fired BEFORE event took place and did not even have the balls to discuss it with him before getting fired)
